Where is the best place to go to find a custom call maker and to read forum posts like I did to find my gunsmith here in the gunsmiths forum?

The best custom call maker for you depends on a lot of things.

What ducks are you mostly calling? Pintails, Mallards, Wood Ducks or ?

Are you hunting big open water, salt water or flooded timber?

Do you want one mainly for its function (sound) or for display? I have some by a few of the famous old time Stuttgart Ark. call makers that are valuable for display but I cannot make them sound right. On the other hand, I have some real ugly ones that I have put together from pieces and parts of other calls that I wouldn't leave home without.

How likely is it to freeze up where you will hunt? For example, I have several calls that have a great tone and are easy to keep tuned but they freeze up quick. I have a few that are the last to freeze up but are harder to keep tuned.

The reality is that you will probably have to try several where you hunt and then zero in on the sound that seems to work best in that area.

Let us know a little more about what you are looking for and we will take a stab at a recommendation of a custom call maker.

Just find a good old style PS Olt and learn to blow and it will beat every custom call out there! My opinion only!

If you went in the RNT shop at Stuttgart during the off season and blew all the various kinds they have, you would probably find something you liked. Hook up with one of the guys working there and spend a little time. Duck calls are a very individual thing. Allen probably gave you much better advice than I did.

Also if you can't make the cheap molded calls by RNT and Echo sound decent, a custom call isn't going to help much. But if you just want a custom call I think RNT and Echo are among the best. I have several of each. For landing ducks I still prefer the Olts after I have worked on them a little. Merg

I would agree - especially if you can find one of the Olt D2's. They are no longer making them for some reason.

Take out the mouthpiece, throw away the plastic barrel, shave the reed til it sounds right then slide it in a custom wood barrel and you have a call that will do it all.

My buddy blows a Paul Kingyon call so well that it's scary. I do OK with a plain Jane Haydel's Redleg, but that Kingyon call is the best I've heard (and I've heard a few!).

I have two Echo's-one Timber and one Open Water that I use. I really think their tone is about the best you can get. That said, they will stick on occasion. I also use a Gaston Timber model that is great-takes a little more air to blow but it won't stick, at least it never has for me.

All of these are acrylic calls.

Good luck-a call is like anything else-use the one that fits you and your style the best...

Sorry about the late follow-up, bud. Been up to my lips in some other stuff, and I'm afraid that some other expenses came up (taxidermy bills and a had-to-have firearms purchase, actually) that maxed out my credit with the wife on the outdoors gear for a bit. Since she knows damn well I already own a bunch of calls, at present I'd be pushing my luck a great deal for me to proceed. Sorry for any inconvenience. If you still have them in a month, well, I just may have 'lost' some of my other calls by then ... Smiler

What? No one has mentioned the Yentzen double and triple reed calls. Been blowing one of each for 30 years.

If you want a custom call, give Bill Yerger a call at 318-688-4484. He owns ON-SITE Gun Repair, and also makes custom duck calls.

Heidleberg makes a good call but pricey at around $300. Not one you want to drop in the marsh.

You'll find a lot of info on this web site. Many of the old call makers are long gone but you can find their calls on Ebay or auctions. Some are extremely expensive however.

Salvage, That cracked me up especially coming from a Louisiana duck hunter.

I use a Yentzen double reed a lot but only when my buddies are not looking. They work very well here but are definately not cool.

The old Yentzen double reeds can actually be adjusted to make a very versatle call. To acheive a greater sound range and more volume you cut that little plastic plug a good bit shorter which makes the reeds longer. This gives them a greater range of sounds and much more volume.

We used to do this all the time in the 1970's when we had plenty of ducks.

I just stay with the Olts now. I don't shave the reed but just work the sound board down. Shaving the reed makes them split or chip off the end for me. Working on Olts can be tedious the first few times. I've thrown away several. Have also worked on them for days at a time. If I can't get one right, I just put it away for several days and then try some more. If you get mad at one you will screw it up every time. I've been offered some pretty hefty sums for mine. I ain't sellin' especially since they are no longer made. Merg
