you won't do any better than H414, RL-19 second choice..If you have a good strong action disregard load data for the 7x57, they allow for the bad Mausers and that single shot Rem..so book loads are overly mild...Start with 47 grs of H414 and work up with your 140 gr. bullets..Ive been shooting, hunting and loading for the 7x57 since 1940s, and a milsurp 98 Mauser..

I really like RL-19.
but I've used 4895,4064,H-450, 4831, and some AA-4350 over the years.

I'd like to see some good full pressure data with MR-2&3000, or maybe even CFE-223.

I have used the same 43.0 - 44.0 grs charge of IMR4064 or IMR4320 and Varget with 140gr bullets in the 7x57 24" barrel and 7mm-08 22" barrel for 2800+ MV in both cartridges. Nothing as good or better in terms of velocity and accuracy for hunting.

that's what my youngest girl loaded last time for her [my] tang safety Ruger.
she either used the Hornady 139 I-lock or the Remington core-lok's.
I wasn't here when she loaded them, but the deer I watched her shoot just dropped like a rock, so whatever they were they worked.

Ive used H414 mostly over the last 50 or so years in all my 7x57s...It meters deadly accurate and gets by far the best velocity, but be advised its a powder you must work up loads for in our strong guns as all the load data is for old rem single shots, mod. 93, 95 and 96 Mausers at 40.000 PSI!! and a modern 7x57 will load up into the 60.000 PSI as max. I load considerably over book max in my 7x57s and have for many many years, cases last forever and I can shoot with a 280 or 7mm/06...I don't shoot the old guns btw...

I could be wrong, but I think they quit making H414. It was the favorite powder for a lot of 7x57 users.

Hodgdon just quit marketing it as H414 starting last year. H414 and W760 are the same powder, much like H110 and W196, or HP-38 and W231. If you can’t find H414, just use W760.

Trying I4064 next.

There are a lot of good powders out there these days (maybe, with this hoarding bs) but much more than we had to choose from 40-50 years ago. That being said, the old argument, "if you could only have one", I would opt for the versatility of IMR 4350 for rifle + 2400 for pistol.

Jeffe,
Perhaps your not using enough powder in your given case..I use H414 in the 220 Swift, 7x57, 30-06, and the 250-3000 and get my best accuracy and velocity..I do however load considerably over most boom max loads..Been using it for many years, high velociy and low pressure much like the old 4831 or 4350 DATA misurp stuff, but in ball powder..I use std fed 210 primers also, and thats not advised by many experts, I have no idea where that came from, its not correct..

I am loading both 7x57r and 6.5x55 at under 50kpsi with Hodgdon Hybrid 100v powder. In their book, Hybrid 100v yields some of the higher velocities at the lower pressures. They show a 140 nosler BT at 2654fps at 43,300CUP and a 160 Nosler partition at 2468fps at 41,600CUP.

I bought 2 lbs a couple of years ago and have just recently started using it so I have little radar results from Hybrid 100v loads. I can attest to the accuracy of one 7x57r load though.

If you have a standard length, modern action and a longer throat, you can seat your bullets out a bit and take advantage of a bit more case capacity.

IMO, your getting low velocity and low pressures with that powder indicating however that you could easily use more powder and get up around 55,000 PSI/

Glad to see this question.
Have been reloading the 7x57 for several years for an OLD Mauser i have sporterized. Because it was on the shelf right there I started with IMR4320 and it worked well for the bullet weights i was using. And the shot consistency improved as the new barrel 'matured'. Could easily get 1 or 2 MOA groups, which works well enough in the brush country I hunt in here in east central Minnesota.

I tried IMR4350 pushing 150 gr Partitions, and they did not play well together. the IMR4320 pushed the Partitions into 1 MOA groups.
But it seems that the I4320 is no longer being produced. Dont have much more of it left.

Some of the responses here suggest IMR4064 works well in the 7x57 so that is what I will try.... especially since recently i was able to buy 2 pounds of the 4064. Will see how that goes.

Well, everyone has different experiences. I have had great luck over the years using IMR 4350 w/ 160 + 175 bullets. Mostly Sierra but Nos/Win 'fail-safes' as well. I still have a few boxes of those here in 160 G. I haven't seen them for sale in years.

Having tried about every combination of loads in the 7x57 since 1950 with ww? surplus 4831, and using a chronograph for more years than I recall, I found you simply cannot beat H414 (760) with any weight bullet form 120 grs to 175 grs if you take into consideration vel and powder..Mostly my 7x57s have had 30-06 magazines with a throat to match for additional powder space...Its as good as the Ackley for all practical purposes. I don't quote guesses or book info..I have two chronographs and use the chronographs with all my loads. Too much guess and by gosh these days. as too pressure we all use guess and by gosh don't we?? a good reason to know the pressure signs and the ability to work up loads to max and a bit beyond then cut back..

H 4831 is by far the best powder that I have ever used.

120-175 grains sub 1" at 100 yds.

H4831 shoots well in my 7X57's with twists from 8.66" to 9" and bullet weights from 154 grains to 175. Current favorite load is 47 grains behind 166 grain Hornady aluminum tips about .015 off the lands.
But. Nosler 160 grain & 175 grain Partition spitzers shot nice groups. Some barrels like more speed up to 50 grains, some less. Groups dropped off over 50.
The H4831SC powder I had tried was close to the performance of the H4831.

Try using 42.0 grains of Reloader 15 with 160 grain Accubonds. It makes my tang safety Ruger shine and runs right at 2600 fps. Not a souped up load but certainly not a slouch and have taken up to kudu with this load with out issue. Prior to this load I used H414 and was very pleased.

As an aside... i just paid $37.50 at our LGS for a pound of R-15. ugh.
