Finally arrived at Mlele.
Emirates was great.
Had a bit of fun with certain members of the party, great entertainment, as usual, when the brain stops working!
3 hours in a Cessna Caravan.
2 hours in a truck, with the tse tse flies trying their best to have their fill of blood.
They were really bad in some areas, great introduction to out Viking friends.

Had sable curry for dinner.
Some rain woke us up at night, not sure how bad it was in the area, but we are going to find out later today.

We are all back at camp.

No one shot anything today.

We were looking for buffalo all day, and only found them at sun down.

Same for the others.

Better luck tomorrow.

The area is fantastic, 2.5 times larger than our Selous concession.

Caught 3 poachers, who took off with their muzzle loader.

But leaving behind a buffalo they had killed the day before.

They had built a fire and smoked it.

We took it all to camp, as well as 2 bikes, gun powder and bullets.

I will post pictures tomorrow

Shortyly after leaving camp, we saw some dugga boys.
Alan said they were the camp bulls, so we left them alone.
A while taler we saw some - some thought were 4 some thought 6.
Too thick bush to be sure.
We went after them, and the wind was going around 360 defrees.
Eventually we caught up with them, and could hardly see them in long grass.
One ran in an open area and I fired a shot at him.
He peeled off the others, and went to an extremely thick area b y the river close by.
We must have spent at least an hour looking for him.
Not covering any distance, as in certain areas one could hardly see further than the muzzle.
We kept scaring him off, and he jumps from where he was lying.
Then he ran off the river into long grass, and would you believe he did the classic buffalo turn around, an ant hill, looking behind.
We saw that and came froim the other side, and could see him looking the otrher way.
Another shot int the back of the head finished him off.
Had lunch, cut him up, and cooked his heart for lunch.

Walter also shot a buffalo.

Anders is not back yet.
Walter and Maktoum are hunting with Pete Wadellow.
Anders and Victor are hunting with Thabit Ali.

Saeed,

Good to see that your safari this year started with a decent buffalo. Keep them coming. This area looks so different from the previous concession.

The Vikings spent the day chasing buffalo, but were unable to get a chance at one.
Walter, of course, had a classic Walter buffalo hunt.

Too long to report now.
Gary had a few grey hairs before, now all is hait has gone grey!
I asked him "what happened to your hair"
He said "being with Walter all day close to buffalo did this to me!"
So many running small rivers. Luckily they have hard bottoms, and one can just drive across.
Lots of tse tse flies.
Lots of horrible mopane bees, which like to get into your eyes.
You might see some pictures with strange head coverings, that is to help against these.
My home made repellent works great, against bother the tse tse flies and these.
On the way to camp yesterday Alan was being eaten alive, and not a single one came near me.
Alan was using the usual repellent famous against flies by Avon - I think it is Skin So Soft.
Apparently it does help soften the skin for the flies.
We are putting lion baits today.
Night before last the lion was almost in our camps.
We did not hear him last night.

Sounds like a good time.

I hear it now a drum roll for the "Walter" story.

Suspense is building.

Walter is the entertainment, all the other stuff is irrelevant.

This one is for the STORIES thread.

No one has been able to fathom what happened - not even Walter himself.

We spent all last evening to examine the hunt.

Fascinating as everyone was actually scratching their heads as if they had been bitten by tse tse flies! clap

Saeed,

Have you presented Walter with his one of a kind, the original "Safari Camp Cap" of 2021?

Some great pictures.

Walter came back very tired but no animal.

Anders and Thabit chased buffalo into the next concession.
I will relate the true story of Walter's buffalo once I can make any sense of it.
Eye witness accounts vary, according to the time of day, the position of the sun in relations to the moon, and whether we are at the dinner table or the camp fire.
Pete is seriously considering giving up professional hunting - he has been Walter's PH for many years.
He said farming might be better for his health.
Gary, Walter's long time camera man, has no black hairs any longer.

Anders shot a duiker, and they had it for lunch in the bush.
I shot a buffalo, and put it up for lion bait.
We had the buffalo heart for lunch.
Cooked on an open fire, and just salt added.
Several tracks were seen, and we hope we might get to see one.
Walter had more hair raising buffalo stories, but no buffalo.

Very little tse tse flies today??
Reedbuck are feeding in front of our camp now after dinner, and hyenas are laughing behind.

I've hunted Mlele multiple times, but not recently (back when RHS had it). It's probably my favorite concession--absolutely beautiful. In particular I remember multiple clear, cool water streams. One day we had lunch IN a shallow stream. We set up the table and chairs in the water, under the tree canopy and ate lunch with the cool water going over our tired feet. Absolutely magnificent. (I believe I still have the GPS coordinates if you're interested). Keep up the wonderful pics. They bring back memories...
