Been there several times but never thought once about trying to take a 'legal' gun with me. I don't think you can hunt anything down there. Bad guys don't seem to have problems getting them, used to hear gun fire at night in certain parts of Sao Paulo in the early morning hrs. Their anti-hunting attitude is too bad as it looks like there could be some good hunting.

.

What kind of importation you want to know about?

You can bring a gun to Brazil for sporting purposes, but it takes some papers and permits before arriving.

As for now, sporting hunting are closed in Brazil.
But the killing of wild hogs (sus scrofa and variants) are allowed in the South part of Brazil, as they are not native and compete directly with brazilian native wild pigs.

I'm going to be hunting in Argentina next year and I was thinking about stopping in Rio for a few days on my way back. I was wondering how much of a hassle that would be with a firearm.

Hello Mikey49009.

Well, I dont know if it is possible to do what you want, without being invited to a rifle match or hunting (that currently is closed) or other "good reason" (in the authorities minds...).

I am not 100% sure, but the most probable is that when you arrive in Brazil you will leave your rifle (inside a locked case and with a brazilian custom seal) with Brazilian Custom.
And when you left Brazil (by the same airport you arrived) you get your rifle back and imediately deliver it to the airline check in.

Probably there will be some form of bureocracy with the Brazilian Army. If you know any shooter in Brazil, it will help a lot as he could help you on this.

If you really want to do this, I can check exactly how it will work. But I need to know which city you will arrive and departure (it will probably be mandatory to be the same city), ok?

Things in Argentina is much, much more easier on firearms. I wish Brazil would follow argentinan regulations...
