The outfitter in that brochure, Curtis J. Prock, was well known across the American West beginning in the 1960s. Prock had guided several hunters, including one of the Herters of mail-order outdoor supplies fame, to jaguars south of Tucson. After an undercover sting operation and his arrest, he was found guilty of selling canned hunts with mountain lions, jaguars and black bears he was buying somewhere. He was ordered to stop guiding in Arizona and pay a fine, which he did. In 1974, he was found guilty of releasing nine jaguars in New Mexico for his fraudulent hunts and paid a fine. His clients included well-known outdoor writers and editors, politicians and other notable people. All claimed they had no idea they were being conned. He next showed up in Idaho (I think it was) as a bear and lion guide before heading to Central America. I'm not certain how true it was, but I was told he was in trouble with the law up there, too. Prock later returned to Arizona, where he lived his remaining years before he died a couple of years ago. Bill Quimby | |||
