Transport from BA to Dr. Pozzi's ranch or Santa Fe?

I'm trying to take my son to Dr. Pozzi's for a week or so somewhere between the 20th July and returning no later than Aug 11. I have confirmed the availability of dates with Dr. Pozzi, now if we can only get there.

This is subject to finding reasonable cost flights from DFW to BA to Santa Fe. I've seen several that price it at nearly $4000 EACH. Too much. I have Kathi Klimes working on it now.

I believe we'd have to switch airports to take the Santa Fe flight. As an alternative, I am hoping that I can hire a vehicle and driver to take me directly to either Santa Fe or Dr. Pozzi's and come get us when we're through hunting. I might rent a car but I really would prefer not to drive. We will not have firearms and will be traveling reasonably light. I actually enjoy seeing the countryside and we are not under any serious time pressures. I am planning on spending a day or three in BA on the way home.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Look at flying DFW to Cordoba via Santiago Chile. I did this on my trip for around $1,700.00 in May. Make arrangements to get from Cordoba to San Francisco, about three hours. Spend some time in Cordoba, I found nothing of interest in BA to warrant flying there as opposed to Cordoba. I flew American Airlines (not the greatest) as they now WILL NOT allow firearms to be checked on this trip, period.

Best way, in my opinion, is through Santiago, Chile, to Cordoba....have done it many times.

Thanks to all for the advice, while I haven't booked it yet, it looks like Steve Turner (I had a miscommunication problem with Kathi Klimes, didn't hear from her for 2 days, and switched TAs.....I am not blaming her, perhaps I misunderstood what she wanted initially)may have found us a DFW-Santiago-Cordoba flt for about $2000 (this in a few hours this afternoon).....not cheap but better than walking.

Unlike Larry, I'd much prefer to go via BA but the flts are somewhat shorter and costs cheaper via Santiago. I've spent time in both and there is no comparison between Santiago and BA AFA I am concerned. BA is better for everything that I can think of, but Santiago is OK with a wonderful Mercado Central. I am planning on laying over there a couple of days on way back to show my son around.

Ok, we're good to go arriving Cordoba 8/1. I'm fired up. I've been to Arg and Uruguay many times (but not for about 10 years, kids change priorities), but taking my son and having the opportunity to meet Dr. Pozzi who I have "talked" with for years makes this a special trip.

I probably should post this as a "special tip" by itself, but the prices of EXACTLY the same tickets (DFW-Santiago-Cordoba RT) went from $1967 on FRIDAY to $1637 on MONDAY, a savings of $330 per ticket. Steve Turner says this happens quite often. It certainly might be something to keep in mind if you're booking relatively speaking last minute flights.

It is pity that I only saw this post today, but as I was away hunting, I am sure I will be excused. I recently visited Dr Juan Pozzi in Argentina, about four weeks ago, to do some wingshooting. Although my contribution might be too late for you and your son, it might have some value for other members planning to visit Juan or Argentina. I flew in to BA from Johannesburg. On a previous buffalo hunt - also hosted by Dr Juan Pozzi - I flew to Cordoba from BA, where I was met by Dr Juan Pozzi and his staff. Cordoba is around 3 hours drive from San Fransisco, where Juan runs his Outfitting business from. This time round, however, I flew to Santa Fe, which is only a one hour drive from San Fransisco. The flight time to Santa Fe is also less - about an hour. I flew on Sol Airlines and booked the ticket on their website. The cost for a return ticket from BA to Santa Fe is around 800 pesos. In a nutshell: flying to Santa Fe saves you 2 hours per trip driving, it is a shorter flight and it saves my friend Juan Pozzi and his staff a lot of time in picking you up. Time which can be better spent hunting. Lastly, congratulations on choosing Dr Juan Pozzi as your hunting outfitter - he is the best. Enjoy your trip.

Herr Jager:

I really appreciate your input but my travel agent couldn't find any flights that would work from Santiago to Santa Fe. OTOH, flights from DFW to BA to Santa Fe were priced at over TWICE what my eventual booking cost. I don't like to put anyone out, especially future friends like Dr. Pozzi, and I would have preferred to fly to BA......BUT it takes several hours longer air time (and like most people I am not particularly fond of being cooped up in a long high altitude cigar tube) and costs twice as much at this time.....the difference in costs was, simply put, the difference in whether I would go or not. Nearly $8000 in airfare for my son and I was not within my budget AND even if it was, my Scottish ancestors would not allow me to spend that on a tickets that I know I can get much cheaper at other times. As my travel agent said, "I don't know what's going on in BA at this time, but ticketing costs are really high."

Finally, the additional time required for the flights DFW to BA, the transfer to the other airport in BA, then the flight to Santa Fe would take significantly more time than the 2 hour difference in land travel between Cordoba and Santa Fe. In short, I get more hunting/ground time by going the route chosen. Obviously from your location going to BA is the obvious choice. Hopefully we can meet in Argentina or elsewhere in the future.

BTW if someone lives on the E coast of US or especially in Florida, then the BA route will likely be the best and cheapest way with some planning ahead.

If I remember right there was also an option going through Bogota to there. I do not know what is happening either but these airfares are all out of whack. Should be about the same as going to JNB to go to BA then another 400 or so to go to Cordoba. The real key is advance purchase at least 21 to 30 days out.
