When would be the best time of year? I'm getting tired of trying to find time in my work schedule to go hunting, and I'm thinking about just going, and let everyone accept that I won't be around for a week or so...

Depending in what kind of fish you are looking for.

Trout season in the south normally starts the second sunday of november and it goes till april (I think) while dorados instead, are year round (for catch & release) in more northern provinces (Corrientes province for example).

If you go after dorados you will be nearer of the dove shooting areas, trout are rather far away (Neuquén province for name one).

Dove shooting is year round so that's not a problem. Go dove shooting to Córdoba or Entre Ríos provinces and then arrenge a flyfishing trip (three or four days will be enough)for dorados.

All you need is a #8 rod and some line similar to Cortlands salmon/steelhead shooting line, you need quick descent lines with 30lbs backing in a good reel.

Goya area in Corrientes province is a good place but sometimes I have fish a lot and sometimes very few, so it's a little risky, it will depend in the river level, water temperature, etc at the exact moment you are fishing..

Good luck

Hi Lorenzo,

The trout you mention. Do you mean Brown trout or the Sea Trout down in the south?

I think I'll be coming to Chile (brown Trout in the mountain streams) and then Argentina for the sea trout in patagonia in 18mths for my freinds 50th Birthday celebration. I think it is January that the trip is scheduled for.

Rgds,

Fallow Buck: there are enormous rainbow and brown trout near the Andes and sea trout in Tierra del Fuego. You may wish to look Joe Brooks´reports on these...fly fishing he got some monsters years ago. The fishing capital in the area is Junin de los Andes. For instance, look at www.riodorado.com.ar.

FB,
Sea run brown trout is done in Santa Cruz province, there are two or three big rivers there (río Grande and río Gallego are some of them, and another one I think called Ewan, maybe I am wrong, just check a map), most of the best pools are obviously in some BIG farms so at least you want to walk a LOT you must go to those farms through an outfitter. I have talk to a lot of people who fish there and everyone talks about the VERY windy conditions, sometimes you can not even fish !!!

Junin de Los Andes as nainital said, is much northen than Santa Cruz, it's Neuquén province. from there you have a lot of places to go but obviously with much more fishing preassure.

I will recommend you going a little South of San Martín city also in Neuquén. something around 100 kilometres south, it's the beggining of the Caleufu river, it's formed by two smaller ones, the Meliquina and the Filo Hua Hum, I recommend the three of them specialy the last one. There is a small lake with the same name, as the river pass through this lake you have two "mouths" or "bocas", boths are very good at the evening with black streamers, the upper part of the river from the lake is very good for big browns using Dave´s hoppers near the banks, specially in february that is when you are going !!!!

I have fished Chile also, the very southern part, near O'Higgins town (you need a charter and several hours of horse riding from Cochrane before arriving to the good spots of the Colorado River, GREAT browns. Maybe now the trans patagonia road (if I remember correctly that was it's name) it's finished and it's easier to get there. Other parts are too much crowded (for me), specially in the places where you also find salmons but I am not an expert so better check this with some other...

Good Luck

Hi guys,

~Thanks for the info. I think the area in Chile is quite a way in the mountains as there is a charter from BA then a ride up. No one mentioned horses, and to be honest I'm not keen on the things!!Wink

The sea trout is on the Rio Grande as far as I know. Is there any hunting down there in Feb?
