Now thats a big puffball. Usually when you find one even close to that size, it's already gone to seed. I've eaten boletes, oyster mushrooms, and shaggy manes. Also eaten morels that a friend finds, they are tops. Can't get him to tell me where he gets them though. Another good wild veggie is wild asparagus.

Morels are the only one I will pick and eat as the "false morel" is easily identifiable and only mildly toxic anyway. I had a botany professor in College who was VASTLY experienced and the most dedicated man to his discipline who I have ever known. Even he refused to pick and eat anything but morels because the similarities between the toxic and non-toxic varieties were just too great to risk one's life.

The best meal on God's green earth is a plate full of nuts (mountain oysters) and deep fat fried Morels! What more could a guy ask for? Well, that's another story.
Morels, the really safe bet for mushrooms. They are soooo delicious. We use to go out in the Ozark hills after a light rain and pick them. Seems as though they would pop up in an area you had just searched. Mom used to dip them in a light batter and quickly deep fry them. She fixed them many ways but this receipe was the best as usually we had a mess of deepfried pearch to go with them. As to the bad Morels, didn't know they exisited. Guess we were lucky.

Here, in Czech republic, near everybody collect and eat mushrooms. It is some sort of national mentality, something like drinking beer :-) . Every child living in country know mushrooms, which are eatable, poisonious, bad taste etc. SO can't understand " you need mushroom specialist" etc. Here, simply everybody know which one, and of couse which kind is good for specific meal. But I must agree there die few people every year here, especially for substitution of Agaricus abruptibulbus and other agaricus to amanita phaloides (white version, can't remember exact name)
The most favourite mushrooms here are Boletus edulis and other kinds of Boletus, Phaeolepiota's, Cantharellus cibarius and a lot more, every king is good for something else . . .and of course a lot of Psilocybe's collectors :-)
Maybe that is why my mother knew all about mushrooms. Her family was from Poland. My relations on that side of the family picked mushrooms. BTW, we also drank our share of beer
Anyway, she passed some of that on to me.
I have run into the mentality that all mushrooms are "toadstools" and they will kill you. I remember roommates in college seriously freaking out because I was cooking and eating mushrooms.
I'm here in western New York State. Have tried my hand at finding some morels as I have heard they can be found I my area. I spend a lot of time in the woods and have yet to come accross any. Any ideas of likely spots to find them?

Thats a nice puffball. I used to cut them in small squares, dip in batter and fry them. When cool I put them in a bag and snacked on them all day at work. I didn't find any last fall and didn't find but 40 morels this spring. Very poor year.
