The chile crop started coming off about two weeks earlier than normal this year. No one knows why, it just is.

May be unusual conditions everywhere this summer.
Here was manifested as really hot early and ongoing.
Abnormally rainy.
No blackberries.
No Mulberries.
Yet another year with no turkey poults.

But Chlie being early just means one can start eating it earlier. Hopefully it will be a season of normal length and there will be a bumper crop.

Have not tried any of the NuMex strains since we order yearly supply frozen and are still eating on that that batch we bought (went through two years quota last year).
Can not wait for a New Mexico chile with even more flavor!

Blake's and Whataburger are separate burger chains, both of which make pretty decent green chile cheeseburgers. But, if you really want a good one, head on up to Hatch and get one from Sparky's.

Was nosing around on the green chile cheeseburger trail. Lots of places get mentioned as "the best," including the Owl and the Buckhorn in tiny San Antonio, the now-defunct Outpost in Carrizozo, Sparky's in Hatch, the Hi D Ho in Alamogordo and Dick's in Las Cruces. Any disagreement from those "on the ground" so to speak?

I've eaten at all of those except Hi D Ho. I'd choose Sparky's hands down for a straight green chile cheeseburger. The Buckhorn is a close second, then the Owl. The Owl used to be top, but seems to have declined a bit in recent years. Plus, their burgers are quite small, so get two. If you stop at the Buckhorn, be sure you have time to wait around, as they don't seem to be in a hurry there. I've only visited a couple times, but both required more than an hour or so to get and eat a burger. Dick's makes a decent burger, but it's just standard fare. Good, wholesome, tasty, but nothing special. Good homemade fries though. Chilito's, run by the same family, makes similar burgers and has a nice selection of Mexican food that I like.

The Buckhorn in San Antonio is pretty good. There is a very small cafe in Aztec, NM called Beer Bellys that is very good. Their fries are excellent too. There are good green chile cheese burgers almost everywhere in New Mexico.

Sorry, I prefer the Thai chili called Prik Kee Noo (พริกขี้หนู). It is used in just about everything Thai, including the standard table condiment Prik Nam Pla (พริกน้ำปลา). The word 'Prik' means chili, 'Kee' means shit, and 'Noo' means mouse, ergo mouse shit chili. I don't know how it got that name. It's a tiny chili and it is very, very hot. It would be well described as a hot little prik.

Bennies green chili burger on 47 just south of Isleta Pueblo on 47.

Or Marguerite's on the highway in TA. Open face burger, but they sure used to be Great eating.

I have tried the OWL burger at SA and in their restaurant in ABQ and they were ok.

The Owl in San Antonio, NM is owned by the original family. The Owl Cafe in Albuquerque, NM is owned by the gentleman that owns Los Arcos Steakhouse in T or C, NM under agreement with the Owl in San Antonio, NM. Good stuff!

Yes Bill you will have some access to great Hispanic based foods and they will vary depending on where you are in the area. Southern will be different than middle or northern parts of the state. Some areas are more cuisine than food, but then that is what it is all about . . . Finding the great eating places.

If you are lucky there may be some international flair being close to the base.

Raider, you are a 90-minute drive from tiny San Antonio on I-25. The Owl Bar's green chile burgers are famous, as are the burgers at the Buckhorn, a block west of The Owl.

Bennie Burgers just past Isleta on hwy 47 used to be a great green chili burger.
Should be something there in Benallilo, but I could be wrong.
Unfortunately great green or red is like great BBQ . . . somewhat in the taste buds of the beholder.
In spite of all of the upscale hype, you may find the good stuff somewhere in Santa Fe.

Bob's Burgers is a chain that has great GCC burgers. All over Albuquerque.

Hatch New Mexico is the only chile for Reyanos for sure, and that sweet flavor only grows in Hatch..Been eating them for well almost 82 years..They are an Anihim with flavor..

I also use Jalapenos, Seronos, and Pequins in the bean pot. All this on a daily bases in pico de Gallo, or just eat them raw with a sandwich.

Guess this comes from growing up with a mile from from the Rio Grande in far West Texas. I love Chile of any kind on a daily bases..I can't imagine life without it.

chicken fried deer meat, piled high with pico de Gallo, highly spiced pinto beans, biscuits and white gravy or just flour tortillas, mashed potatoes, sometimes corn on the cob. West Texas ranch food at least once a day.
