I was reading about currywurst being the most popular street food in Germany, and wanted to make some for the family. Lots of different recipes online, some with onions, some without, some with ketchup, some just tomatoes or tomato sauce, etc. For those who have actually eaten currywurst in Deutschland, have you found a sauce recipe that comes really close? Have a favorite brat to serve it on? Vielen Dank! There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

Bill, Before my senior year in high school, 1980, I spent three weeks in Germany on an exchange trip. I ate lots of currywurst. It was really good. I couldn't hazard a guess at recipe's. The sauce had something to make it red. It was not very tomato-like. It was not spicy at all. Not much help, Tom

Macs, thanks for that link. Ordered a 10-pack. Have a favorite sausage or brat to put it on? There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

I have to admit, my German experiences are minimal, so I had never heard of currywurst, but my curiosity made me look it up. This guy seems to know his stuff and this recipe seems like it would suit me, especially by making it hotter and less sweet, so I'm going to try some the next time we cook brats from Kuby's in Dallas. http://www.thekitchenmaus.com/homemade-currywurst/ xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. Charlie, I saw that recipe early in my searches and will be curious what you think of it. I will likely be using Johnsonville Smoked Brats. I will also try the Kitchenmaus version and compare it to the Knorr packet version when those arrive from Deutschland. Further online searching revealed that World Market (used to be World Bazaar) had the Knorr Currywurst on the shelves. So the last time I was in Dallas, a few days ago, I picked up a couple of packets for $2.99 each plus a quarter for the State of Texas. At any rate, my wife and I just tried it on some Johnsonville Orig. Brats. I found it be good, not great. A little sweet for my tastes, so after tasting it, I added some habernero sauce and it warmed up. I think it would be good on a brat on a bun, mixed a bit thicker. I'd give it about a 4.0/5.0. Based on this effort, I doubt I'll make the online recipe, although I think $3 for what you get as a packet is a bit high, probably can be homemade for much less. Thanks for the tip, Bill, interesting new flavor. PS: World Market also had a Knorr packet with some potato mixture. Looked like it might be some kind of cheese flavor. I thought about it, but decided I'd try this first. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. The Knorr packets are great. They also sell a premixed Currywurst ketchup that ain't so good. Aut vincere aut mori

My recollection is that it was a little sweet but the combination worked well. I tend not to be a big sweet meat eater also. It could just be I remember the good times that the specifics of how it tasted. Tom
