Here's a giant puffball I found a few days ago. Not the best eatin', but OK. I know about 10 different kinds of wild mushrooms that I eat. Been eating them since I was a kid. My mother used to pick them. You must be very careful though....kind of like reloading.

Don't eat them! They will kill you horribly by destroying your liver, and there is no antidote.

I have heard the advice that one should not eat wild mushrooms unless they are gathered with the help of an experienced local expert.

Expert, because the mushroom picker needs to know what he's doing.

Experienced, because even experts make mistakes now and then. Mushroom experts with a long track record are the ones who haven't made a mistake yet.

Local, because there are regional differences in the appearance of some types of mushroom.

I dunno, actually. Maybe if they look really tasty and not like any poison ones anyone here has heard of, maybe they're safe.

If you want to die a horrible death from systemic organ failure, have at it.

One of my college professors ( who had his Ph.D. in Mycology ) was also an avid wild mushroom collector.

He died from renal failure about two weeks after eating mushrooms that he and his wife picked on an outing in the Blue Ridge Mountains. His wife survived - just barely.

I think every guide to wild mushrooms has a disclaimer printed in the front stating that harvesting and eating wild mushrooms is akin to playing Russian roulette.

Wild mushrooms are the only ones to eat. Right now the chanterelles are out,you can pick 5gals. in 10min. if you are in the right spot. Nothing tastes better than fried grouse or backstrap and mushroom gravy. Fuzz

There is nothing wrong with eating mushrooms . I live near the mushroom capital of the world ( Kennett Square ) and you tend to get mushrooms where ever to go to eat. People in the eighties having eaten mushrooms all their lives are in better shape than allot of people that do not eat them. You do of course get the pretend to be Yul Gibbons that goes out an eat a toadstool and dies. I put them on the grill in soup on salads stuff them eat them raw ................I'm hungry now.

I don't know what kind of mushrooms you are eating but believe me I love them.

I bought a good book on mushrooms and tabbed all of the easily identifiable ones that don't resemble in any way any poisonous ones. Things like Morels, puffballs, Shaggy Mane, etc. That way I'm not playing Russian Roulette.

Funny thing I found out from the book. It lists some mushrooms that are safe to eat, as long as you don't consume them with alcohol. Then they become poisonous. I'm assuming that the alcohol and the mushrooms both take a toll on your liver, and it can only stand so much at once.

Just this morning, a co-worker brought me a book of edible wild plants. I plan to peruse it from cover to cover while I'm up moose hunting, and maybe take advantage of some of the local fare. And hopefully, I'll find some wild mushrooms as well.

Found a lot of mushrooms when I was out pheasant hunting last week. I was 99% sure they were OK, but had forgotten my mushroom book at home, so didn't take the chance. [Frown]

I am no expert so take this witha grain of salt but Heart palpitations, and fast breathing are the only things I've heard about certain mushrooms and booze. I'm not sure what these types are but I'll only eat the ones I know are good.

BTW -
Good luck looking for moose.

Be very careful with wild mushrooms!

My grandfather was married 3 times, and all of his wives died because of complications with wild mushrooms.

the first two ate poisonous mushrooms and died. The third one died from head trauma, she wouldn't eat her mushrooms.

We have 2 kinds of silly-cybin growing wild here on the wet coast. One autumn while I was working as a mushroom grower I stopped to have a look at what people were picking and had to inform several skeptics that they had up to 3 or 4 of the deadliest fall mushrooms in their stash. I just hope they took my advise. Now I know the whereabouts a huge area containing chanterelles, and at $6/lb would create some fine income, except it's been so dry up there nothing has come up for at least 5 years. derf

I'm a sucker for giant boletes and both the dark and gold morels.

I even trained my bird dog to find boletes this summer. She points them! Man, I love that pup. [Wink] Dutch.

A lifetime ago I used to dine on Psilocybin Cubensis (made fine tea as well, and less horrible on the palate). Hours of cheap fun, but no high from those days approaches that I derive on a hunt.

Max503,
I never saw anyone big like that, but in the past I've found mushroom like that here in Italy. However I heard about mushrooms big like your.
Well if the internal part is white, the smell
remember hazelnut and it is not too soft (rubbery), if it is declared eatible by a good mushrooms manual, I love to eat them raw with salt and olive oil, or making slices of 1 / 1.5 cm, then put in the flower and fried in the butter. Very good to eat with eggs.
bye

Mushrooms - yummy!

I did a survival course once (the tough one at Hereford [Wink] [Wink] ) and we had a two hour lecture on the uses of wild mushrooms from a little old lady from Sussex who was the UK mushroom expert.

Pick the right ones and you can make shoes, firelighters and a hat out of mushrooms. You can even eat them!

Golden Rule - Positivly identify the type before eating.

Stuffed and baked puffball makes a feast for all the family. [Smile]
