Want to "prank" a new friend

At this point in my life due to age and health issues I primarily shoot Sporting Clays except for an annual trip to Argentina to shoot birds. I have reloaded for many years. Started with a MEC 600 JR then the progressive MEC's then PW's and now a Spolar. Mainly load 28 gauge with some 410. When I go to Argentina in May we have a guy new to our group that we want to "prank" with the blessing of our outfitter. We will all be shooting 28 gauge O/U's (we all take our own guns). We want to remove the shot from some 28 gauge shells and replace it with something that will still go "bang" but not kill a pigeon except for extremely close range. I have thought of birdseed or some type of small plastic pellet? Definitely do not want to harm his gun. Any advice would be appreciated.

#12 (dust) shot over black powder. Or, just the shot.

Glass polishing beads.

They work out well for short range shots.

But after 20 feet or so they well not pernitrate paper

Personally I find pranking friends to be in poor taste.

It is a good way to lose a friend.

Not at all.

Depends on how strong your friendship is.

We had a gentleman who used to shoot release trigger.

Because he didn’t like recoil.

He sent his shotgun to be ported, so he gets even less recoil.

I loaded some ammo with rice, and kept in our shooting club.

The Greater Houston Shooting Club.

The shotgun arrived, and he wanted to test test.

Told him I already did, and it hardly kicks any more! rotflmo

Out we went to the skeet fields.

Also told him porting can change the point of impact, and better shoot it at something!

I suggested the rubbish drum.

He didn’t want to shoot the drum, said he will get chewed up by the manager.

Then he laughed and said he would say I shot it.

He fired at the drum!

Complete miss!!

But no recoil.

Next I suggested he shoots at the wall separating the fields.

Again, complete miss!

The penny dropped.

I got an earful of insults!

And we laughed about it! clap

A true story from long ago. A friend of the family had 3 daughters. The middle girl became his designated shot shell loader. She loved to pull pranks on dad so one day she loaded up a box of shells for his 20 ga. She replaced the shot with sand (she was not a gun person). Dad started banging away at some clay birds but kept missing. He kept at it and was getting very frustrated because he just wasn't hitting anything. Finally the daughter fessed up and told him what she had done. I am not sure what he had to say about that but I expect he was not happy. His 20 ga. was a Browning O/U and I have always wondered what the barrels looked like after that adventure?

Years ago we had our own group of old rabbit hunter friends…
One of the old timers was always borrowing shot shells …
We made some special loads for him , with toilet paper ..instead of shot …
