Until yesterday, I’m not sure I’ve ever reloaded with any primers other than Win209s. I currently reload only 410s and 28s. Both of those are with Win HS shells and I have well tuned Ponsness Warren 800s set up for each. Problems are infrequent, but are more with 410s – maybe one every couple of 100 and that’s usually when working with shells reloaded multiple times. Yesterday after starting with the Cheddites, I started noticing primers seating problems on many of the reloads. I assured I was using only once fired shells, tried adjusting the primming post, and made sure to pull decisively on the priming stroke. That helped some but nearly thirty of the 100 needed individual resets to get normal flush primers. Some were protruding almost 1/16”..! One other annoying factor was the width of the Cheddite package. It is too wide to simply place in the tray and slide the cover off. When finished, I was too aggravated to check the 28 but hopefully that works better… Plus I've got a sizable inventory already reloaded. Any similar problems and/or suggested solutions? I gave up on the Cheddite primers because they seemed to not be quite the right size with my usual US made hulls. They did work well with the European shells (Cheddite, Fiocchi, etc) that I used some of with BPI’s hunting loads, but what you describe was my big issue. I’m starting to see W209’s again. I may have to bite the bullet and pay the $80/1000 they want. I quit loading 12 and 20 ga Target shells due to primer availability- and I’m running low again. So the only “help” I can offer is use them with the European rifenhauser hulls.

Thanks for a very useful response! I'll look for a couple of Fiocchi 410 flats, tune reloads, and start working through my 5,000 Cheddites. Think they were about $30 a thousand less than Win 209s, but knowing what I do now I would have kept looking for Winchesters. Thanks again,

The euro shotgun primers are just a hair wider in diameter than American primers. Note- I have no idea about rifle primers, as I only use US rifle primers. Anyway, the euro primers generally work fine but can be tougher to seat the first time you reload them, especially in the 410. Also, it does not work well to go back to American primers once you have shot euro primers- the American ones can and will occasionally fall right out of the primer pocket.

Good point on expanded pocket size. I'd probably have dumped the fired reload hulls in with my bushel or so of 410 AA hulls. Leading to different problems... Thanks
