They just ditched their Home Depot sales partnership on their solar panels, lost some of their engineering braintrust, and now they are axing 9% of their salaried workforce at their struggling auto plant. With more and more competition coming to market from seasoned car manufacturing companies, Tesla is in a tight spot. Certainly worth watching what happens next.

I was not aware of the Home Depot cut. Could be that HD just was not pushing it the way Elon wanted. I have been in HD recently and so no signs of any partnership involving solar! The 9% cut will be interesting as it is not production people. Not prepared to attend the wake just yet, although I know that you and your buddies are hoping... Drill baby drill! Peter. Peter for your edification I am a stockholder in Tesla for over 5 years when it was still a double digit stock and have purchased periodically since then. If anything I am PRAYING for Elon to get his crap together and FOCUS on his ailing auto company and less on his rocket company - which I am totally impressed with by the way. In regards to Home Depot, it is a huge commitment in inventory to be on their shelves plus profits are "locked in". Elon is wanting to go a more direct marketing model through their stores and online as competition is heating up and profit potential is tightening in the solar market. There have been several interesting breakthroughs in solar panel efficiency that now exceed the 25% efficiency benchmark while production costs continue to decline. The market is becoming more and more competitive - that translates to lower and lower margins. This is generally not good for a US based manufacturing company with our high production costs. Going from innovation to mass marketing is a challenge. Many innovators cannot make the jump. ___________________ Just Remember, We ALL Told You So.

Agreed! As I said before, China is the big player here, although their manufacturing costs are higher than Malaysia and other countries. Not sure if it mass marketing or mass production. One thing is for sure, costs have to come down. I do think that the solar shingle idea is a good one. Peter Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. The problem with solar is storage and the fact that it only works half the day. You can purchase 22 watt + capable panels made in China for 20% less (or more) than what Elon is peddling here. His batteries are better, but at what cost? The battle between Tesla and the rest of the world is much like the battle between IPhones and Android phones. Apple is selling the "experience" and the rest of the world is selling a phone. As long as your customer base is blinded by bullshit, then Tesla has a chance. But the competition is mounting and Elon is building a massive battleship that is difficult to turn. It's easy to be an innovator, but damn near impossible to be a nimble manufacturer. Chinese manufacturers come and go as new technology is developed and comes to market. Elon is betting that he can stay ahead with massive capital costs already sunk into the ground. If his auto plant is any example, he'll have one hell of a time attempting to stay nimble and will have to be willing to eat a lot of obsolete capital costs and that's just going to make his crap more expensive on top of the fact he's a US manufacturer. Case in point - Toshiba is winning the battery game at the moment and Elon is struggling to get his new solar based battery to market. He's facing a lot of headwinds and his focus is divided - vehicles, rockets, solar panels, batteries, boring machines, high speed trains, etc, etc. ___________________ Just Remember, We ALL Told You So.

Hmmm. Isn't this the old issue of quality vs. quantity? Doesn't the market decide? "The problem with solar is storage and the fact that it only works half the day." Hmm. I thought that was the whole point. Isn't that what the word storage means? My car battery does something very similar doesn't it? Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. The market does decide and once the "experience" wears off, it all comes down to cost vs benefit... like everything else in life. ___________________ Just Remember, We ALL Told You So.

Will be interesting to see what Tesla's market share will be as more EV come on the market and become better.

Drove the F Pace a while back. Not impressed at all- no power, cheap interior. My wife's new King Ranch F 250 Diesel Crew Cab is more impressive. And in the spirit of this discussion is whispering quiet for a diesel. There are two types of people in the world: those that get things done and those who make excuses. There are no others.
