I guess you don't need a V8 to hold the World Record in the Pike's Peak Hill Climb, just a French driver and a French car. Here's a nice on-board video, start to finish. Love the fast steering wheel shifter. The gearing on the car was really tight, I imagine to handle the power needs of the vertical change. Great clip, Wink! | |||

no, he didn't have a V8 Engine, but he did have a BIG turbocharger, on the V6 Engine he did have.. a combination rather like a late 1980's F1 car... AND probably making as much power as most WW2 figher planes... If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day! They paved it because the dirt road cost much more to maintain and keep safe for everyday use not just for the race. I fear that the speeds and the growing number of fans will lead to it being stopped or it will become a closed course race with no spectator areas other than some bleachers or something. It is only a matter of time before we get a crash resulting in spectator deaths and that will be that. | |||

the reality is that they paved it to make higher speeds possible, and thus generate revenue. That just led to higher speeds, and a lurid spectacle when someone does crash. It's like NASCAR these days. They think speed sells, not the actual racing, so they allow the horsepower race to continue. Then guys are going fast enough that a serious crash kills somebody. That was not, imho, a serious issue for NASCAR until Dale Earnhardt rammed into the wall trying to block another competitor so his son could win the 500 and killed himself. So, all of a sudden we have soft walls and the HANS Device; because slowing the cars down isn't what NASCAR wants. Just like drag racing, the NHRA does not want to slow the cars down, so they cut the track length from 1/4 mile to 1000 feet. Three years later, the cars are just as fast, they just have 320 more feet to slow down. | |||

Went to the peak climb back in the 80's solely to see Bobby Unser drive the Audi Quattro turbo on the dirt. 5 cylinder, turbo charged, all wheel drive 710hp. That made a lasting impression on me. Talk about drifting on dirt at 100+. Also saw a Wells Coyote get really loose coming out of a corner go over a berm and catch huge air, like 50 feet over the tops of the pine trees kind of air. | |||
