I recently purchased a 45 Hawkin used. The barrel is rough from neglect, otherwise the gun is in nice condition. What would you do for a barrel? Rebarrel, reline? Any thoughts would be apprecitated, David

http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/c...nrenegadestylerifles The Hawkins is the 15/16" I would stick a 50 on it. and since I would go with a non lead ball I would go faster twist. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Green Mountain's "Drop-in" replacement bbl. for the T/C's are the best. Their slow-twist ( "roundball") bbl. is as good as any BP "match" bbl out there.

Here is my Hot Rod Hawken. It has a stainless Green Mountain fast twist 45 cal. It also has Lyman 57 SML peep sights and a Lyman 17 AML globe front sight. It is a tack driver. Ron

Update, so I've been shooting this gun and lapped the barrel some and it's looking pretty good. I've only shot 25 yds. so far and can keep them in about 2 inches. I know thats not great but promising. I bought moulds, Lee combo 440&325 REAL. It was supposed to be a REAL 200 but casts out at 251. I'm working on the mould and my casting skills, dead soft lead. I am shooting real black powder, way better groups than 777 loose. Still looking at the GM barrel though. I'm really enjoying this. David

Idaho Ron, that is a nice looking rifle. What are you using for bullets? By fast twist do you mean 1-28? I've been real tempted to go that route but want to keep recoil down due to some shoulder issues. David

stronics, Mine is 1-30 twist. I load this gun to 90 gr and this load shoots very well. I have a Renegade with a 1-18 twist for big bullets. I use a paper patched Lee Minie that I size to .446 and paper patched. After patching I size again to .446 and they are ready to go. This is a picture of it sized to .446

Idaho Ron, Now that is cool! I'd love to see some targets if you have some. How do you start the bullet down the barrel? Do you use Real BP? Thanks for sharing the photo's, David

This is my best group with this gun. Most of the time it is sub 2" at 100 yards. The bullets are sized to .446 so they start easy. They push down fine and stay on the charge. I have several of these guns. This one is a 50 cal Fast twist renegade. This has been my main hunting gun for a few years. Use a Paper patched 500 S&W bullet. I patch them and size them to .501 after they are patched. Theses go down a little harder but shoot fantastic. I have shot several game with them. Here is the bullet and target. The way I have these guns set up I read the range finder and set the sight to that yardage. If the range finder says 125 i set it at 125 and hold dead on. If the shot is 75 I set it for 75. I have them sighted in for every 25 yard increment out to 300 yards. Ron

Idaho Ron, That is some nice shooting. Thanks for the photos, I may have to try that one day. What barrel do you find the fast twist in, GM? In loading them do you use a special starter? David

All of my barrels are GM's. Nope, I don't need anything but a rod to load them. Ron
