Does anyone have any experience with the 58 caliber TC Renegade that is offered in the Custom Shop. How much more powerful is the 58 compared to a 54? Bullets and supplies hard to get? What kind of loads? Interested in anyone's experiences. Thanks Paul TC Custom Renegade "Diligentia - Vis - Celeritas" NRA Benefactor Member Member DRSS

Paul:I own 4 t/c 2 are flinters ,one is a 50 cal. the other a 54 cal.I also have 2 more t/c that are 54 cal,I myself would say I favor the 54 cal.I would also think you can purchase a new like used t/c far better then the price t/c custom shop is asking $519.00. I would check out the m/l forums and you could get a t/c flinter for around the mid $200.00 and still have the lifetime warranty that comes from t/c in 54 cal, the 58 I have seen for sale are most percussion when it come to the 58 cal.

i havnt shot a 58 yet.. i have an order in for a .62 cal swamped barrel for a mark silver fullstock from john getz.... searching thru balistic printouts of the 54,58 and 62 ive found that the larger the ball the slower it needs to go to have power.. the 54 sheds velocity quickly, i dont think so much becouse of its balistic coeficcent is less but becouse the high velocity at which it starts.. if you start a 54 at 1700 ft per second it has less power at 100 yards than a .62 that starts at 1350.. the 54 looses up to 650fps and the .62 looses about 390fps.. so its a tough choice as tarjectory is better with the .54.. another down side of the the smaller bores is that recoil of the fast moving balls with lots of powder is quite a bit higher to get the same power at 100yards.. now balistics is hard to identify actual use in the field preformance.. so im talking theory.. if you go thru the archives of this list and others youll find the .58 haveing quite a bit of power in some accounts.. dave hunter, blackpowder shooter, photographer, gemology, trap shooter, duck hunter, elk, deer, etc..

I have a TC 58 Cal "Big Boar", it's not a flintlock. It shoots quite well, especially round balls. I have no problems getting supplies for it.

I have two seperate TC 58 cal Big Boars and both shoot extremely well. I am guessing that this is what your referring to since the big boar looks exactly like a renegade. I mounted a scope on one of them just for kicks and shot 60 grs of FFFg and the 58 cal Hornady Great Plains Bullet. At 100 yards, i had three shots touching in the shape of a cloverleaf. The group measured about 1.2" center to center. I can live with that from this rifle. I've shot three deer with them so far and none were over 100 yards. Needless to say, after gettin whacked with that big bullet, they took maybe 2 steps except for one that made it about 20 yards...no problems tracking. It looked like someone had taken a bucket of blood and slung it everywhere. I've been pretty satisfied so far.
