I've been casting 370 grain Maxi Balls for many years but still seem to just stumble around in the process every time I do it. If my bullets don't turn out perfect I remelt them. I keep about 1 bullet for every 10 or 15 I cast. Many come out with wrinkles of 1 sort or another. Again, I remelt them. Any ideas? I'm pretty non-scientific about the whole thing. Also, where is a source of lead and is pure lead[99.97%] what I should be using?

Yes, you should be using the purest lead you can find. Of scrap source, used roofing lead seems to be about the best I've encountered. Just be sure to clean it good and make your ingots OUTSIDE where there is lots of ventilation. Stir, stir, stir. Flux at least every 10 pounds (cedar sawdust works).

MidwayUSA sells ingots for about as good a price as you will find. Shipping tends to be a bit high.

I would clean the mould thoroughly with white gas or similar and an old toothbrush. Look for any stuck particles or possible blockages in the vent paths. Good clean lead in your pot (the pot temp may be your problem - either too hot or too cold will cause problems but I would sooner err on the hot side), fluxing, skimming and mixing often to maintain an even melt temp and mix.....

Have to know more about what kind of pot you are using, whether it's bottom pour or just made for a ladle, but try to keep a rhythym going and keep your mould at a fairly consistent temp for each pour. Pour a bit of excess each time, then wait about 5-10 seconds after the sprue solidifies to use the cutter. Expect 10-15 poor bullets at the beginning of each casting session but keep up the rhythym and you'll start to see good ones with regularity.

Good luck. There are MANY that post here in the cast bullet forum that could and will offer you help in overcoming problems.

Thanks, I really appreciate the info. I'll clean it up and heat it up. Thanks again.
