I have a TC Encore .50 cal. Starting to get ready for the Colorado Muzzle loading elk season. Can't shoot sabots in Co. I just can't make this rifle shoot Power Belts accurately. Usually 7" - 8" @ 100 off bench. I have heard that since the Encore has the recessed crown, many of them won't shoot anything but sabots accurately. Is there any truth to that? Actually, mine won't shoot sabots all that accurately either. Best group with Hornady SST's, 90 gr granulated Pyrodex, new Rem muzzleloading 209's was just 3 shots in 4 inches @ 100 off bench.

Anybody had there barrel cut of and re-crowned? Or put a custom barrel on one?

Any other suggestions appreciated!

Hard to think the crown is the problem. I've coned a lot of muzzles, (though I wouldn't do it to my rifles) with no change in accuracy. I'd start by getting rid of the Pyro'. I found it to be the least accurate ML propelleant I've seen (also more corrosive). I'd also use loose powder rather than pellets. So you can work up loads a little at a time. Try 777 (if you must use a substitute) or good black powder. You might also try a well lubed maxi or one of the others like the Lee REAL bullets. The fast twist in those rifles also might require you to slow the bullet down a little to prevent stripping.

Can you buy Lee REAL bullets or do have to cast them? I have heard good things about that design.

For best accuracy real FFG or 777???

Also brayhaven, what is your opinion about the .25 ACP breech breech plug instead of a 209?

I can't honestly say about the ignition, ledvm. I shoot a flintlock most of the time, hunting & percussion in competition pistol, rifle & shotgun. As a gunsmith, I've only worked on one that had the 25 acp ignition. (not an ignition problem). I guess from a reliability standpoint, it's hard to beat a 209. You can light up a charge of peanut butter with one Smiler. That said, most of my customers using 209's, are using the reduced power ones specifically for ML's with no reported problems.

Brayhaven,

You did not say whether you thought granulated 777 or real black FFG was the most accurate powder???

One other thing that I have read about is the QLA on some TC barrels. Apparently some of the QLA (false muzzles) are not in line with the bore of the barrel. This small amount of misalignment doesn't show up as much with sabots but is a problem with conicals. Shooters with this problem have had good results by cutting the QLA off, recrowning the barrel and reattaching the front sight.
