After happily shooting a Ruger Old Army revolver for a few years I foolishly sold it. Another few years and now I want another one but they have been out of productions for quite some time.

So who currently make a really good black powder revolver? As we can not hunt with handguns here in Ontario the gun is for target practice.

Thank you for any suggestions or recommendations.

I had a Pietta 1851 Navy .44cal which was beautifully made.

Don't know about Canada but in the states the ruger old armies are available on the used gun market and not too hard to find in nice condition.

I have been very happy with my Rogers & Spencer replica (there are several models).

I own 2. Both in .44 cal.

The first one I bought about 10 years ago is a Navy Arms / Pietta 1858 NEW MODEL ARMY steel frame with brass trigger guard. Shoots great as seasoned as the barrel is, it's very accurate up to 50 yds, even took a loooooong shot at a 200 yd target once, with success.

The second one is a new acquisition. Again a Pietta. 1851 Navy De Luxe. Brass frame and engraved. Shot for the first time yesterday. Since it is a brand new one the accuracy is not there yet but again it may be me, I'm not used to the notch-on-hammer rear sight yet.

I can honestly recommend both if you are looking for an inexpensive smoke stick. no idea if they are available in Canada though.

Cheers

1858 Remington has all sorts of features that make it a "better design." One obvious is the top strap. The next is that they're designed to swap out cylinders fast, without tools. Most come w/ a second cylinder.

I have a Pietta, stainless w/ second cylinder and a cylinder pouch. I think used I paid about $175. Nice fit/finish.

What Wink said, plus one!

I got conversion cylinders for mine and can now shoot 45LC moderate loads. Best part, so far the fedguy hasn't caught on to that. 200gr bullet at 900fps is right up there.
