Small Fish:

I noticed that feature the other day when I was at the T/C website also. I have solved the problem of the extractor being in the way of breech plug removal by just removing the primer extractor in my gun. I don't really see that it is needed anyway.

It is a neat idea though!

This extractor question keeps popping up so I thought I would go to the source. I just got off the phone with T/C. The answer to whether the extractor is needed or serves a purpose in the encore 209x50 is this. "The extractor is there to extract the used primer". So I guess the real question is this. If people are taking them out, are they not working or just not working well. If they are not working well I could understand removing them. You guys that have them tell me what it is or is not doing.

I'm not picking on anything or anybody here. This just seems to be a topic that keeps coming up. I would honestly like to find out myself.

The primer extractor works great. The only problem is that it makes the gun harder to clean. If the primer extractor is not present in the gun it is still very easy to remove the primer with your fingers. The problem is this: If the primer extractor is in position then to remove the breech plug of the Encore you have to 1)Remove the two screws that hold the forearm on the barrel and remove the forend 2) Tap out the hinge pin and remove the barrel from the frame 3)Loosen the set screw that holds the primer extractor in place and remove the primer extractor 4)Remove the breech plug. Not a big deal but it adds steps to the cleaning process.

Without the primer extractor all you have to do is remove the Breech Plug to clean the barrel. The gun does not have to be disassembled to clean the barrel. The primer extractor works fine, it is just not needed in my opinion.

The breech plug in the Encore is identical to the Omega's breech plug. I use both of my breech plug's interchangeably in my Encore and my Omega. I honestly don't know which which one came with which gun. Since the Omega doesn't come with a primer extractor why does the Encore? Probably just because all of the other centerfire rifle barrels have one.

In a centerfire rifle barrel for the Encore the cartridge extractor is needed to remove the fired cartridge.

Hope I didn't confuse you more. 8point

Thanks 8Point, that explains a lot. For some reason I was under the assumption that the extractor on the encores actually had no function. Then after talking to T/C I found out differently.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

In all honesty (as usual) I did have a primer stick once when it was really cold out.I needed to really pull on that sucker to get it to budge.I still won't put the extractor back in.Maybe the brilliant engineers at T/C should have made the EZ tip original equipment from the get go.Who knows, maybe I should get one. Making it original equipment would be great. Then again, they wouldn't be able to charge extra for it then.

I'll pass this post on to my buddies and see what they think. Thanks for the heads up.

Completely removing the extractor also makes it easier to install a primer in the rifle, IMHO. I carry a straight-line 209 capper that has a slight lip on the end intended to provide a means of prying out a stuck primer. Have never had to use it on the Encore.

I make a slight downward bend toward the end of that straight capper. That helps also.

Apparently the hottest 209s are the Federal 209 magnums and I've read of those sticking in an Encore. The Winchesters I use come out easily.

I ordered an EZ Tip. TC already has it on backorder. The extractor has been out of my barrel since day one and there has been a time or two that I needed pliers to remove a primer.......So, for the cost, I think the EZ tip is what I need. We will see how well it works if I ever get it.(hopefully this is a shorter back order than for the G2 [Roll Eyes] )

As of yesterday, Thompson had not shipped a single one yet.

They had a few for the Shot Show, but that's it. I've had one coming since January!
