Well it is kind of new. I got a TC renegade Hunter on a auction. I got it for a great price intending to change it a bit. I put a 50 cal, Green mountain stainless steel barrel on it. It has a 1-28 twist for conicals. Idaho has some traditional hunts that allow conicals, NO SABOTS ALLOWED. Has anyone had any good luck with this type of barrel? I am thinking about using tripple 7 for powder. I would like to be able to shoot 150 yards. I am thinking about adding spirit level front sight and a Ladder back sight. Has anyone had any experience with this?
I really need a good bullet! Ron

A spirit level is a complete waste of time for shooting under 200 yds. Even over 200 it is pretty much not a factor.

I use tang sights. They give more sight radius but out to 150 for hunting, you should do fine with barrel sights. You might consider somehow fitting a two-leaf express rifle sight to it, and filing them for 75 yds and 120 or so. That would be a nice combination.

Why use 777 when the real stuff simply cannot be beat? Cheaper too.

Good luck and have fun,
Brent

I agree with what Brent said, especially about using real BP.

As for the bullet, you should be able to shoot the heaviest available bullets with that twist rate. The lighter ones may not be as accurate at a fast twist rate. I was just looking for some of my favorite pointed bullets, but most don't seem to exist anymore. I really like the 400 grain QT polymer tipped full caliber bullet that Precision rifle USED to make. I'm glad that I bought lots of them when they were available. I have about 300 of them left. They still make the "Ultimate 1" bullets. You can get them in several nose shapes, including semi-spitzer and spitzer hollow point.

However, when shooting heavy bullets at black powder velocities, a pointed tip is not really needed, especially at 150 yards or less. I like Buffalo bullets in most of my guns, although the Thompson Maxi Balls and Maxi Hunters shoot well. The Thompsons hold lots of lube, which I like. And I just like the name "Maxi Balls"!! Smiler

A friend of mine really likes the Power Belt bullets. They apparently don't need any lube with the Pyrodex that he uses. They load easily and are very accurate in his gun.

To be honest I hate black powder. The stuff stinks and is hard to clean up. I have used Pyrodex with some good sucess. I like the idea of the triple 7 because it sounds easier to clean and doesn't stink as bad.
In Idaho we can't use a bullet that has any plastic on it in a traditional hunt. I am going to try the Whites muzzleloader bullets. In The 50 cal they come in 400 gr and 450 I think. They have two options. A .500 dia bullet and a .503. I am going to try the .500 first. It is called a Buck Buster. They should be a good bullet if they shoot good out of this barrel. Ron

Idaho,
I can't say much about your sense of smell. Personally, I much prefer the smell of the real thing.

But I will say that Pydrodex is MUCH harder to clean well and it is much less forgiving if you don't. No Pdex will ever touch my rifles again.
