Well, when loading a BP muzzleloader, the rule is "use the same volume of powder and shot". So if you set your measure to throw the amount of shot you plan to use, such as 1 Oz. in a 16 -ga., you can use that same VOLUME of Pyrodex RS. I have no idea of what this amount of RS would weigh on a powder scale, but your MV with such a load would be in the vicinity of 1000 FPS.

Of course, when loading SHELLS instead of a ML barrel, you will have to adjust the wad column length so that when the shot is poured in, there's just enough space in the mouth of the shell left to allow you to crimp it closed.

I would put a card wad over the powder, then use whatever length of a felt cushion wad column is needed to come out right as far as the wad column length is concerned, then add the shot & crimp it closed.

65 to 70 grains will be just fine. I shoot 80 grains some times, I haven't had luck with wimpy loads cases tend to burn.

Hodgdon says use 80 gr. Pyrodex in a 16 ga with paper wad and filler, and 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 oz shot. For an ounce of shot, 90 grains is recommended.

This is according to the paperback manual they give away in gun shops, 2004 edition.

Carlos, thanks for the hint, I will try 80 and 1 ounce. 65 and 70 grains are too little, and the chrono indicates only around 270- 290m/second.

80 grains and 1 ounce, plastic hulls and 2 plastic wads from BP are giving me 370m/second, that is about 1210fps. I think that is too much for an old Black Powder Drilling. I will try to get around 1100fps.
Any guessings?

Since 70 is too little and 80 is too much, I would next try 75.

If you are using number 5 shot or larger, 1050 fps is enough. For number 6 shot, 1150 is about right. 1200 is best for smaller than 6.

Make sure you are getting a good crimp if you are loading shotshells. A good crimp will ensure the powder burns better and you will get higher velocity. I use vegetable fiber wads. The plastic ones melt and make a mess inside the barrels.

Use one card wad over the powder, and a 3/4" thick fiber wad for cushioning the shot charge.
