1858 remington
any one shooting an 1858 new army ? wondering what kind of accuracy they are capable of at 25 yards. Also, Any one know about reaming the edges of the cylinder, the part that cuts the ring off the ball as you seat it ? I read somewhere its better to swag the ball down than to cut it and push it in.

I had at one time or another 2 1858's and the accuracy was average. Eventually I was able to find a very early Ruger Old Army with the larger chamber capacity and used it mostly in the local inpromptu competitions. derf

Well......I can't tell you much about reaming the chambers, or "how well they shoot" as I've never loaded my 5 uberti (from Cabela's) 1858's as cap and ball revolvers......but I can tell you how well they shoot .45 Colt handloads!!!!! extremely well !!!! Taylor's bought the right to be the sole distributor of the Cartridge conversion cylinders, so I can't make any money selling them anymore. But they are well worth a try.
Now here's the impotant part: realize that quality control is an oxymoron still with these guns (that's why they are so cheap)and I'm not talking about Armi San Marco, I mean all of them. Cabela's has a no question return policy and if you ask nice they will send a call tag for return shipping, just site how bad the offending problem is.
Also if you look real hard you can firnd a target version cap and ball 1858 they even have gain twist rifling...try Dixie gun works.
Oh, and if you want to try the "reaming" thing spare cylinders are cheap, just make sure to specify the brand of gun when ordering.

If you are nice I could be persuaded to time, tune, headspace, lighten the incredibelly heavy trigger, etc.

I've got one of the Uberti '58's. It is an excellent revolver in every way. After filing the front sight to regulate point of impact it shoots to point of aim at 25 yards and groups around 2 inches from the bench with lee conicals. This revolver has had no tuning or anything else, it is box stock and the trigger breaks clean at 3.5 lbs. Best $250.00 I ever spent on a pistol. [Big Grin]
I'd avoid the pietta version (cabelas) there are reasons they sell for half the price of the uberti's.
