Hi! I had a Sharps Pedersoli in caliber 45/70 that I rechambered to an 45-100. I used 90 grains of Swiss 1.5 back Lyman Postell 540 grains. I used one wads cut from a milk carton. I tried to shoot at 80 yards with the iron sights that is original on that rifle. I shoot 40 bullets with that load that day and used a blowtube between each. All 40 bullets was within 2 inch. The velocity was average 1380 fps. I used a reamer 45-110 sharps bought from Midway for this becourse that reamer had very short free bore. So I set the bullet just to hid all the greace groove in the cases. After a while I decided to rechamber that rifle again to an 45-110 with the same reamer. And I did. This time I used brass from Norma, Bell and Buffalo Arms. I used 95 grains of the same powder and also wads with lube on. I also tried with a tun plate maded of lube back the wads. All of these works well, and now the rifle shoot even better (I think its the job done by the lube that I had in the brass). 1" to 1.25" at 80 yards. The velocity was 1420 fps average with the same bullet. This reamer give you so short free bore that when you set the bullet with all grooves in the case the front driving band engages the rifling. I cant say that the recoil is more now than before, and its not bad at all. I think that you get use to the recoil if you practise a lot with big rifles. I practise with a 458 WM, 458 Lott and 500 NE. The 500 NE is built on a Ruger No1. I use 115 grains Vithavouri 160 back a 570 grains bullet at 2180 fps. That rifle weight 11 pounds, but offcourse I do not like to lay down as I do with my sharps and shoot 40 rounds out of that rifle. Personaly I think, it dont matter what caliber you choose to go on, 45-90, 45-100 or 45-110. They all do their job quite well if you doing your part. Its more imortant that you choose something that feels good for you. I cant say anything about 45-120 becourse I have no experience with that caliber, but Im sure on that you dont get more out of it than you get out of a 45-110. Look at the movie the Quigley Down Under, and when you know that you must choose a 45-110. I did. | ||
