I am a french outdoor & hunting writer and for one of my next articles I would need some basic informations about black powder hunting in the US and/or Canada. Facts & figures : (i.e.) (brief) history of this kinda hunting in North America, why and how many hunters hunt that way and above all the difference between primitive and in line muzzleloaders (especially legal aspects). Thanx folks ... cuz I am really in big trouble ... ;-) and a special "Waidmannsheil!" to all the Nuge fans like me (I am a TNUSA member) | ||

Alex, basically, hunting and shooting with black powder arms, particularly muzzleloaders, never really stopped in the U.S. due to the advent of breechloaders and smokeless powders. There have ALWAYS been a few adherents to the old ways - some out of nostalgia and historical interest, buit some out of economic necessity is such places as the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, and PA for example. Now, of course, use of ML, and also black-powder breechloaders, has really caught on, and literally thousands of shooters are participating in matches, re-enactments of various wars, and hunting with BP weapons. I believe you'd have to contact the game departments of various states in order to find out how many ML hunting permits each sells every year. If you contact the National Muzzleloading Rifle Association (http://nmlra.org/) and the North-South Skirmish Association, (http://www.n-ssa.org/) they could let you know about match and historical reenactment participation in the U.S. Waidmann's dank!
