I have a TC renegade I picked up for next to nothing. I have put a Green Mountain "LRH" long range hunter stainless steel barrel on it with a 1-28 twist. The gun shoot large lead slugs well. The big problem is the sights. They suck in a big way. I am thinking about putting on either a Lyman 57SML adjustable peep or a vernier Tang sight. The front sight will be a Lyman 17AML or a 17 ATC depending on if I can find a Vernier tang sight I can put on it. I want the sight for hunting but I want to use it in LONG range muzzleloader shoots. Our club has a long gong shoot that is out to 500 yards at times. I am leaning to the lyman 57 SML because I think it would be better for hunting. I think the vernier tang sight would be better for the long shoot. Has anyone had any luck doing this? Ron

I've used the Lyman 57SML on a T/C Hawken. I doubt it will provide the elevation necessary for shooting 500 yds. For that kind of range, you might need to look at mounting a Soule Vernier Tang sight on your rifle. Works great on my BPCR 45/70 for the real long range shooting.

What kind of range will I get out of the 57SML? Also Where do I find a Vernier Sight that has the correct curve to fit a renegade? I haven't been able to find much so far. Thanks Ron

Ron, I can't really quantify the range you will be able to get using the Lyman, but I know that if your front sight has any height to speak of, you're going to have to crank that Lyman up awfully high to reach out to even 250-300 yds. Knowing that the trajectory of your slug gets mighty parabolic beyon 300 yds....I can't imagine having enough "clicks" left on the Lyman to do much out at the 500yd. line. As far as fitting a Vernier tang sight...figure out which one you want, then get a good machine shop to fabricate a brass adapter, the bottom of which will fit the curvature of your stock, the top of which will fit the base of your sight. Hey....look on the whole thing as a "work in progress"...it's all part of the fun..!! Don

Ron: I have fitted tang sights to the stocks of two guns. I made an adaptor plate similar to what Don describes, but I filed my own out of a chunk of 1/4-inch square stock, inletted it into the top of the wrist of the stock, and glass bedded it in. The first thing that I did was drill and tap the plate for the sight base, I started filing after the holes were established and ended up with the plate about 3/8" thick. To increase the hold of the plate into the stock, I filed a grove parallel to the top in each side of the plate for the bedding compound to grip. After the plate was finished, I cold blued it. I used a 1/2" Forstner bit to establish each end of my inlet, and then carefully chiseled out the wood between the two holes. I then undercut the inlet for the glass bedding. The whole job took about 1-1/2 hours. Dave One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know. - Groucho Marx

I ordered the 57 SML and the 17 AML sights for the rifle. I also ordered a dovetail file, a #29 bit, and target knobs for the 57. I am looking forward to see how they do. Ron
