I'm planning to purchase my first muzzle loader for an upcoming Elk hunt. I want the system to be as simple, reliable, accurate, use pyrodex pellets, .50 caliber, and for a left handed shooter. This will most likely be the only muzzle loader I'll ever purchase. So, I need to get it correct.
No stores in my area carry black powder guns. So, I've been looking in the Cabela's catalog for idea's. So far, I like the looks of the T/C Omega. Appears to be the ticket.
Also, since I'm new to muzzle loaders, are there any good "How To" videos to teach me the correct use, care, and handling.
I would recommend the Omega. A left-handed shooter can shoot it as well as a right-handed shooter. Mine shoots well and cleanup is a piece of cake. About as simple as it gets.

Ditto on the Omega. I'd use 348 powerbelt aerotip along with hodgons's 2f triple 7. Also with the Omega you get the advantage of a 28 inch barrel in a 24 inch size gun.

Besure to check the regulations for the state where you might be elk hunting. Some states do not allow closed breech mechanisms, some do not allow 209 primers for ignition, and most have caliber and sight restrictions. Knowing the "where" of your intended hunt would help in making a recommendation.
If closed breech and 209s are okay, I would go with either a White Thunderbolt or a T/C Encore. My opinion of the Omega is a bit lower than most here have expressed. If no 209s or closed breech is allowed, then I would take a hard look at the White Elite Hunter. White but don't let those prices scare you off, you can do better (considerably better on the Elite Hunter).

Just for another opinion you might want to check out the Savage ML 10. Supposed to be the easiest to take care of and the most like a centerfire gun...too much so for some. By the way, where are the "traditionalists" posts?
There is no doubt about it the omega is one of the best black powder firearms available, but the encore and new G2 contender are also fine reliable guns with the ability to accept rifle and shotgun barrels.
The Omega is supposed to be a fine blackpowder gun.I have shot both it and the Encore and the Encore seems to shoulder better. Both guns are accurate.I wouldn't believe the hype about the Encore being innaccurate because in the 5 years I've had mine I've seen no such propencity, and the bulk of shooters posting agree.Mine shoots very well,if not superb.Pick up both guns and shoulder them before making a decision. You WILL make up your own mind.
Thanks to all that replied. I'm ordering the Omega. I called T/C and they suggested using Pyrodex powder over the pellets for accuracy. They also suggested using XTP bullets.
Cabela's isn't the only catalog out there and they are overpriced. D&R Sports has the Omega at $50 cheaper across the board.Cabela's reams you on shipping too.
