I am new to muzzeloading and in the process of developing a load right now. Heck, I'm still learning what powders to use! My rifle is a .54 Cal T.V.M Leman with a 36" barrel and iron sights (traditional muzzeloader). I am shooting round balls only. I "think" I would like to have the point of impact ~1" high with a 6 o-clock hold at 100 yards(that way I could still see the target and allow for slightly longer shots). Does this sound reasonable? Also, what kind of target do you find helpful when shooting at 100 yards? Most of my shooting to date has been at 50 yards (looking for a good group before moving out to the longer range).

Welcome to the sport MHC_TX. Sounds like you already have a good game plan. My roundball shooter is a .50 caliber Lyman GPR. I have it zeroed at 100 yards using a six o'clock hold. What kind of groups are you getting at 50 yards with the Lehman? My best group at 100 yards has been about 1 1/2" but most fall between 2-4". I would suggest that you use a fairly large bullseye at 100 yards with open sights. I use bulls with a diameter of at least 4". Black ones seem to work best for me. I have a white front sight and black contrasts better than the flourescent orange dots that I use for scoped firearms. The flourescent orange dots really get hard to distinguish when I shoot my fiber optic sighted Omega with a flourescent red front sight!! HTH...good luck X

Yes, it is reasonable but a 6 o'clock hold works better (best?) if the target size is a constant. Is it blasphemous to suggest an 8" bull[seye] with a center hold such that all your shots will group ~1" from the top? Just some food for thought.

Are you shooting offhand or benchrest? My experience was that when sighted in for benchrest, I was a tad low on offhand. This is only important if you shoot matches.
