I'm interested in what velocities 45-70 black powder loads produce with 300, 405 and, 500gr cast bullets. I'm interested in loading some of my more traditional guns to traditional levels with smokless. Any load suggestions welcome too.

Thanks...

Hi Curt,

I have a Pedersoli sharps with a 32" barrel.

My experience with 2F Goex black powder and lead bullets is as follows.

Lyman # 457193 mould, 413 gr. bullet as cast.
Alloy 1:40
64 gr. 2 F Goex
All lube grooves inside case.(Hunting load)
1248 f/s, outside temp. 70 degrees.

Lyman # 457125 mould, 518 gr. bullet as cast.
Alloy 1:20
66 gr. 2 F Goex
Bullet seated to engage rifling.(Target load)
1175 f/s, outside temp. 70 degrees.

Both loads are compressed 1/16 of an inch, and have a newspaper and cardboard wad. Bullets are lubed with Lyman black powder gold.

I hope this gives you a starting point for your load development.

Sorry, I have no experience with the 45-70 and smokeless powder.

Thanks! That gives me a good idea what to work to. I'll probably be able to use a case full of Varget and get to about the same velocity you are getting with 418gr's and still have really low preasure. Guessing the velocity may vary much more than BP though. Think I'll load some up in the morning and head to the range.

Thanks again...

Go to Accurate Arms powder companyweb site and look at data for 5744 and 8700.
Both of them can be used to meet the load specs you are seeking.

After looking at AA's data and xmp5744, I went out and bought a pound to try. One thing that is interesting is when I called the store where I buy powder and asked if they have xmp5744, they said no but they have xmr5744. I went out and looked myself. The front label says xmr5744 and the side label says xmp5744. Hope AA is better at making powder than they are at labels. Maybe a collector's bottle of powder [Wink]

Still have'nt made it out to try things yet. Hope to soon...

Curt,

I hope it works out for you.
5744 should give you the speeds you want.
Keep me posted.

In my Pedersoli Sharps I use Vithavouri 133 powder for hunting. In Sweden we cant hunt with BP because its forbidden by law. If we want to hunt we must use Pyrodex or modern powder.

The Vithavouri 133 gives the lowest pressure and the highest velocity. I modern bullets, but know I shall start to use bullets of lead too.

Remington 300gr hollowpoint, 55 grains V 133, velocity 2073, pressure 20,000 CUP

Hornady 300 gr hollowpoint, 55 grains V 133, Velocity 2116

Hornady 350 gr, 52 grains V 133, velocity 1984

Speer 400 gr, 49 grains V 133, velocity 1870, pressure 21,000 CUP
