I chronographed some loads in my .45-90-2.4" yesterday, and was surprised at how low the velocity was. I'm shooting an NEI, 500 gr. paper-patched bullet, over 80 grs. of Cartridge GOEX, compressed .312", Federal 215 magnum primer, in Starline .45-90 cases. I did a 10 shot average, cleaning the bore every 5th shot. The chrono showed an average velocity of 1112 fps, and a standard dveiation of 10. Doesn't this seem extremely low for the powder bullet combination? The barrel is a 26",.450" bore/.458" groove, 1:14" twist, with 8 grooves (.458 Win Mag barrel). Am I expecting too much from straight black? I had anticipated 1300-1400 fps. Byron

I don't have my books handy but that does seem slow. Try Swiss 1.5 fg. I get about 1325 for a 550 grn bullet over 100 gr of 1fg Swiss and a 32" barrel. 1100 will kill whatever you want however. Brent

If 1100 fps will do it, I'll just concentrate on shot placement. I've never shot an animal with a black powder cartridge, so I'm not sure what will do the job. I realize that people have shot large critters with all of these old rounds for the last 135 years, but I haven't. Most of the game I've shot was with a .30-06. I want to make sure I'm "using enough gun". I tend to approach things I'm not sure about cautiously, since I survived my misspent youth. Thanks for your feedback on the subjects I've brought up Brent. I like to pick the brains of people who have been there, and done that. Byron

quote:Byron, if you are using a heavy bullet, at these low velocities they tend to just keep on going forever. 1100 fps will pass through any bison broadside and most elk end-to-end. But one thing I would caution against. Do not expect 30-06-like reactions from the game. That is, they may or may NOT flip over backwards upon impact never to so much as twitch again. They will simply die, after running a few dozen yards or simply standing there for a half minute. This is fine. However, if you wish, you could try a diferent powder. Goex 2f might be a bit fast. Also, the 2002 vintage (see batch stamp on bottom of can) is reported to be faster than old Goex of similiar grain. Or, simply get some Swiss 1.5 fg. This will be right around 1300 or better unless you have a particularly slow gun. Either way though, if you hit'em in the lungs, they are going down very quickly. Good luck. Brent

I seem to recall the 45/70/405 that I played with doing 1300fps or so on 3F Goex. derf

I get between 1175 & 1200 fps from a 26" Marlin in .45-70 using 70gr GOEX FFG, and a 405 FP RCBS that actually comes out about 420gr. To get that extra couple hundred feet per sec. with the same loading may just be the differrence between your 26" and the longer tubes. There was a reason they used so many 30 inch or longer barrels, you may have stumbled onto it.
