and, oh by the way, watch out for any sharp edge around the rear of that trigger stop screw!

Don, I have one but I've not shot it much nor do I own a chronograph. I could never convince myself of the use of a chrono for MY own needs but at the same time admit the results are interesting.

I am wanting to find a conical that will do well in the little rifle and will direct my experiments (when I finally get back to shooting!) toward finding one that performs well without torturing me.

Rifle rigged as shown weighs a fraction of an ounce under 7lbs so I won't be going too heavy on the bullets.

Well, you're right. I tried 777 and got 1730 avg. for 100 grains and just broke 1900 fps for 150 grains using 200 gr SST's. Of course, my groups opened up using 150 gr. It's doing about 3 1/2" grp at 10 0 yds.

This may be an ignorant question but why are you burning so much powder The owner of the Black Powder shop here in town told me years ago that a black powder rifle can only burn so much powder the rest is blown out of the barrel with no increse in velocity. I have killed more than 5 deer with my 54 Knight Predator using 80grs pyrodex RS 240gr sabot and/or round balls from 20ft to 90 yrds. All of the bullets and/or round balls went through the deer and had good expansion. None of the deer went more than 30yrds most never moved. I am planning on getting a Stainless Contender but it will probably be 50cal. I just can't see the need for all of the recoil and speed you are talking about for a Black Powder muzzle-loader.

Swede, I agree with you on the powder charges but that doesn't make us right.

Notice that is WEIGHED powder. I've not shot the rifle much at all - had to do something about that sharp end on the trigger stop and I've just gone pure lazy. I've also changed to the higher power scope pictured in my previous post. Little rifle looks like it might prove to be an excellent shooter.

To my knowledge - the G2 Contender is only available from T/C in THIS CONFIG. Stainless will probably be down the road (I don't think there are SS G2 actions yet) and .50 caliber will surely have to come from outside T/C.

Underclocked Good Group.

I meant to say Encore not Contender when I mentioned the 50cal that I want to buy. I have been told that the trigger is better on the Contender than the Encore. One of my friends has an Blue Encore I like the break action and 209 primers Vs my Knight Preditor that only used #11 caps. I have been thinking of possibily getting a 45cal barrel also. If you shoot sabots with the 45cal what bullet do you use? I have looked at the powerbelts but have never tried them.

Best of luck with your 45 BP

Don,
Makes you wonder if 200fps is worth the extra recoil, doesn't it? 200fps isn't much at all, expecially with a 200gr bullet.

Looks like 100gr may very well be your most efficient powder charge. Hard to believe there's THAT much velocity difference between your G-2 and my longer barreled guns. 1700fps will be plenty to take a whitetail to 100yds or so. The only other bullets you MIGHT try are the 225gr/275gr Powerbelts. The 275gr Powerbelt is a great .45cal bullet.

Sorry Swede, but I'm not one to ask about sabots. I have an aversion to plastic but those darned PowerBelts sure are nice to load and shoot pretty good. Chuck (6x6) could tell you a whole heap more about sabots for .45 or .50 than I ever could.

I tend to be a heavy conical fan but this G2 just won't be "user friendly" if I try those - unless I slow 'em down to near stop. I do have some White PowerPunch 350 grain sabot bullets that do very well in a couple of other rifles - they would probably do pretty well in the G2 and I may yet try them. I also have some conicals in the 225-300 grain weight range that I'm going to try.

PowerBelts are great - just NO reason for them to cost as much as they do (except profiteering) and Dead Centers from PRBullet.com are dandy but also quite expensive. Mark Lynch from over at HuntAmerica has made me up some test samples of --->HIS CONICALS<--- in lighter weights and I'm going to give those a try. His bullets are all swaged and uniform - all the conicals I have from him are knurled. Take a look.

Underclocked, see you have you a new one looks good.
Swede, you said you were thinking of getting a encore,If you do I would try shooting the 200gr bullets in the 50 cal barrel before getting the 45 barrel.I had the 45 with 1/20 twists,T/C sent me a 1/28 twist and never did get either to shoot very well. But the 50 shoots them too good.I cleaned my 45 barrel sealed it in a vacumn bag and stored it in the closet last year and it will probably stay there, unless someone wants to buy it.
The encore trigger ,you can change the spring in it,I have mine set on 2 lb.
I did shoot the 200 sst and the 195 barnes in my encore 50.But won't use the barnes anymore because I shot a large 8pt buck last year, bullet didn't open up couldn't find any hair or blood, but did find the buck.Shot one with the 200sst,didn't go but a few yards but there was blood all over the place.Hope my experiense helps you.
