Well, I just finished up building a 12-bore Jaeger rifle. I am using .735" balls that weight 597.5 grains with a 0.15" T/C greased patch. I must now head to the range with file and hammer in hand to "zero" it. I would like to have a load that gives me +- 1350 FPS MV, and zero it to be +2" @ 50 yds, - 2 @ 100 yds, or close to these figures.

Anyone have a load recommendation for me?

(Long Hammock barrel, Davis-Jaeger lock & trigger, Tiger Hunt premium cherry stock.)

Thanks

i shure do i owed a german jager built by james a gefroh or fort collins colorodo.

i would start with 170 grains of ffg and work up to about max 210 of ffg black powder

my rifle liked a 15 thou wonder lube patch with a 10 bore shot gun cushion wad under the ball patch combo with 180 grain of swiss ffg powder the swiss is hot powder 180 grains=200 grains of goex black powder.

700 Nitro- Thanks for the recommendation! Did you ever chronograph that 180-grain load? If so, what was the MV? What's your barrel length on that Jaeger? Mine is 28"........

My 12 bore is .721 lands, .736 grooves, with a 1/72" twist. 34" long.
I shot a few over the chrony with goex 3f and got:
100 grs, .010 wonder patch, no wad, 1260 fps
120 grs, " " 1369 fps
160 grs, 12 guage wonder wad, .010 patch, 1580 fps
210 grs, " " 1726 fps
I was using a .715 rb and musket caps. All loads over 100 grs shredded the patch, with or without wads.
I haven't done much developement, as the danged thing tenderizes me quite a bit after 10 or 15 rounds from the bench.

I can imagine! I'm very surprised at the velocities you got! Even with FFFg, they are impressive! Thanks for the info!!

I do have some .715" balls I could try with a thicker patch. Of course, my barrel is 6" shortedr than yours, and that'll no doubt have an effect on velocities.

Probably go out tomorrow and try to get the sights "regulated". Guess I'll start with 140 grains of Swiss FFg, and if that gives over 1300 FPS with any kind of accuracy, I'll stick with it. At +-1300 FPS, a .735" RB will have about the same trajectory as a .22 LR HV load., +3.3" at 50 yds when zeroed at 100.....

El Deguello: How do you like your barrel. Long Hammock seems like a pretty good source, as I am considering a big bore percussion. So they do round-bottom rifling?

Mine does not have round bottom grooves. It has what I would call "Forsythe" style rifling, narrow lands and wide, relatively shallow grooves. 1/78" twist. The type designed to permit use of a wide range of powder charges with patched round balls without serious degradation of accuracy.......

I don't know if Long Hammock offers round-bottom groove rifling.
