My Steve Earle CNC replica of the Frank Wesson Number One Long Range action came today. Artistry in steel is about the best description I can make.

Rich and Josh, my friend hst (ACGG gunsmith Glenn Fewless) has one of these that's perhaps one of the three finest single shots I've ever seen. He posts on the ASSRA.com and doublegunshop.com forums and photos are there.

Glenn is a master metalsmith and retired toolmaker so of course the metalwork is superb. Ken Hurst did the exquisite engraving, it's well worth a look. Wish I knew how to get those photos over here but I don't have access to his photo gallery.

It's my understanding that Glenn himself has won at least one national championship with this rifle. Steve Earle's actions ROCK!

Ken Hurst called me right before Christmas several years ago and told me about Steve's actions. He was so wound up about them that he insisted I call Steve and order one. That is why #23 is mine.

That reminds me I need to call Mike Lewis and find out why its not finished. I think we decided to build it into a light-caliber silhouette rifle. Mike had been shooting a 35-40 and I thing that is what we had decided to do with my Earle action.

My neck has finally healed to the point I can get prone again, so that Earle-Wesson in 35-40 should make a perfect combination for silhouette.

38-90 or 45-120?
I would shoot the 38-90 about ten times as much, but the big 45 (equivalent to the .450"-3 1/4 NE.

I built mine in .450 NE, not quite done yet, but getting close. I was worried about total weight of the rifle with the .450 until I shot my friends really light Watson .450 NE single shot sidelock. That gun comes in at 8lbs on the button.....seemed too light until I shot it. Mine is currently around 9.5 lbs wearing its pattern stock which is very light wood and lacking sights and swivels. I think completed with a dense stick of wood I should end up right at 10 lbs.....perfect for a .450 single shot. I'm with you on the single shot addiction. I have my Wesson and a vintage Holland/Woodward I am working on. Fun stuff.

All this big bore talk has tipped the scales in favor of the 45-120. It didn't hurt that Bill had a set of 45-120 dies and 15 Norma cases for sale at a very good price. Now to rustle up a box or two more.

After reviewing this thread and some other websites describing Steve's work I have decided to place a deposit for one of his actions. I was surprised at the reasonable price compared to other comparable actions.

I was a little delayed with other projects, but my deposit is now in place with Steve.

I am leaning towards a 30-40 Krag sporter, but am not certain yet exactly what I am going to do with it.

Well then, here's a couple three non professional shop pitchers. Mr. Earle's Wesson is the finest made single shot action I have ever worked with.

Damn, you got that one right, VERY, VERY NICE!
What caliber? The inletting looks to me like you would have to be very well skilled in wood working for the inletting... Is this action any more diffucult then say a Ruger #1 to inlet?

Thanks for the kind works. It is chambered in .45-70 and is the rifle I am currently shooting in BPCR silhouette competiton.

The only additional inletting challenge would be the lock plate. There are a couple wood duplicators that have patterns for the action. A quality semi inlet stock would certainly be an aid to stocking one of these.

The Rigby Flats add a very nice touch. Had to look at the pictures twice to see them. I am still undecided as to what to build on mine. Some evenings it is enough to just open the box and look at it...

Those Rigby flats are integral, not separate pieces inletted into the parent barrel as some smiths have been known to do.

Glenn is far too modest, he has won at least one BPCR National Championship with at least one of his own rifles but I don't remember which one.

I think I know who is going to do the metal work on mine now. Doug Mann did this stock work. Glen can start in a year, which gives me time to recover from going to Africa in early April and pay the taxidermy bills. Creedmoor, similar to this one I think.
