I was in a shop in Eastern NY today, and saw a 30-40 Krag browning hi wall? Can't decide if I liked it or it was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in my life.
Anyone else with one or an opinion?

I like the Traditional Hunter models though
and have 3 of them, 2 high walls, 1 low wall.

I really like a hi wall however it is heavy to carry. The 30/40 is near perfect deer cartridge. I have a 30/40 in a ruger #3 and can get around pretty well with that, The gun that I want most would be a 30/40 in a lowwall but won't spend the money for a gun and then have to rebore and rechamber. Really the question is would you use it? And please don't tell where it's at.

I have a Browning 1885 High Wall BCPR target rifle in 45-70. It's a nice rifle, but not my idea of the ideal hunting rifle.

What model is it?

I am not sure if the B78 was available in that caliber or not.

If it's more of a B78 than the current piece of shit Winchester it wouldn't be too bad.

The mounts were a bastard, as they really sucked on the B78s. But if you could get around that it would be a great gun.

I think about the only production rifles made in .30/40 in the past 75 years, at least up to now, were the Ruger #3's and a special run of a few Ruger No. 1A's......... But in a strong rifle, it makes an excellent cartridge, easily capable of equalling the .308 Win. - or better!

The Browning B78/1885 was not available in 30-40. The Browning 1885 was made in 30-30. I don't know if a very recent run has been made in the Win. 1885. The Ruger No.3 and the run of No.1RSI are the only ones I know of built in quantity in 30-40. I have been heavy into the repro. Browning, Ruger, and original Winchester single shots.

I had a lovely high wall, thin wall with a half oct./have round barrel in 30/40 krag that had a pension for 220 gr. corelokts, this was in my mispent youth.

Shot a lot of deer and a couple of elk with it and alas it went the way of most of my prized possessions, I probably traded it for a 20 year old rope horse on its last legs or some such ridiculas deal..but like any gun whore I soon let it pass and continued on my merry way to fame and fortune by trading off all the good collectables you can imagine..but hey they weren't worth much in those days..

Happened to be on Gunsamerica yesterday and searched 1885 getting 3 pages of results. On the second page half way down there are several Winchester 1885 HW Trappers listed, some in 30/40. Weight 6 lbs. Short barrel 16 1/4. It looks much like a Ruger #3. Don't believe I'd buy one.
