I recently came across your forum and have been doing some research on a new rifle. I had decided to get an EABCO rifle until I read this, Poor EABCO Barrel Quality as well as a few posts on other sites. Anyone have any recent experience with this company?

My opinion of them is they're ugly. Life's too short to hunt with an ugly rifle Wink

I had a Ruger #3 rebarreled by EABCO. It took over one year and I would rate the job poor to fair. I was told the barrel was made by Shillen but I don't believe it. For this, and other reasons, I would not recommend them. I have heard good things about their 97D single shot rifle (really a pistol action) but have no experience with one myself. Agree with Brayhaven...it IS ugly.

I have one of them but the pistol not the mod 97 rifle. Still it is the same action
I love mine and shoots 3/8" @ 100.

It came with a fabulous trigger that is unheard of these days.

The over all quality is very good and yes some have come out of the shop a little funky looking but his newer styles look pritty good and I think mine is quite handsome

Check out the link below for some up to date info on what Brown is currently turning out. If you follow the threads you will find my comments on a newly purchased Model 97D. Good luck and I hope you make a good informed decision.

I talked to them a while back (8 months), and they were not easy to talk with; I got the impression they didn't care whether they got my business or not - so NOT !

Can't comment on their current work but I have one that I had made about 9 years ago and it has been a great little rifle. I had a .32 H&R made on a .308 bore.

I got the same impression 15 years ago. I wrote for Precision Shooting Magazine at the time, and they became advertisers for awhile. They were interested in having me (PS) do a product review, but after eight months of, yap-yap-yap, I gave up on ever getting one to test. Every different caliber I proposed was going to require them to buy a different reamer and they kept indicating that I should buy the unit (at a nice discount). That of course, skews the article when you say I bought a rifle (that I was not sure I would want) to be able to test one.
I was just uncomfortable with talking to them.

Don't be to quick to judge. If Brown is in the process of takeing a big step by makeing his own barrels I wouden't be suprissed to see him stumble a little at first.

I really don't know what his quality controll is like at the moment it's been 9 years since I placed my order but considering the quality product I got in the end I feel compeld to give Brown the benifit of the doubt. It may not be that the mod 97 is the wrong gun but this may be the wrong time to buy one.

Keep in mind that the two guy's on this thread that had good things to say about EABCO are the ones that own the guns.

Certainly possible...but I contacted a guy on another thread that has one - and a bad one. He sent me several emails between him and Brown. Brown does not think there is a problem, and frankly, based on what I read and heard, not someone I would ever want to do business with just on general principal. I also contacted EABCO - did not speak to Brown himself but to Jill and Ryan (I think). Both rude and clearly not willing to do anything for a customer. I offered to pay extra for a third party barrel - no dice. The big question then becomes - "Do I want to pay a lot of money, wait a very long time and MAYBE get a decent gun?" I do not have that kind of time and money to throw away, especially when there are other "safer" options. Too bad though, I really liked the way that "ugly" gun looked.

The 97D is a small frame falling block rifle that's suitable for big game as well as small game and varmint hunting. It originally evolved from our World Champion long range silhouette pistol action and accurate gun making process.
The 97D action itself is inherently accurate and simple... no vibration or stress inducing machinery hanging out into the forend. Onto this we fit an EABCO Accuracy Barrel, precision turned and threaded between centers at a rate that keeps stress and flex out. Barrels are snugged and131760

Been a few months since I fisrt asked this question...and have since been educated about the EACBO products and Eben himself. While everyone will have their own opinion, most of the people I have met that have had direct dealings have nothing good to say about the man himself. All of his components WERE outsourced and were high quality until about a year ago when he opened his new shop and started making his own barrel blanks - since then everything I have seen is absolute garbage. If you can pick up an old one you can get a great product.
