I have come across a single shot bolt action with a magnum boltface.. but I have noe clue what to build on it. What would you do with it? Suggestions, or pointers to where I could look? Or are all bolt action actions only good for "target rifles"?

I would suggest figuring out what you would hunt/shoot with it first, and working out a caliber from there.

I believe you would find that many hunting rifles, not single shot versions, are of the bolt action type. As to what you have, it would seem that it is destined to be either a varmint(large varmints!!)or a target/long range rifle. With the magnum bolt face, you have a very good candidate to build a 300WinMag which is a superb long range caliber. A bolt gun that is set up strictly a single shot is not that common and you may have a single shot "tray" installed which is easily removed?? Not knowning just what you have makes it difficult to advise.

Single shot .30-.338 Win Mag The key to the retirement system for large North American game: 180 gr bullets leaving the muzzle in excess of 3,000 fps. Don't ask me what happened, when I left Viet Nam, we were winning.

Exactly WHICH action? I can think of SS bolt actions worth more than $2000/ea and then there are others worth no more than $200/ea (if even that much). Regards, Joe __________________________ You can lead a human to logic but you can't make him think. NRA Life since 1976. God bless America!

Custom-built beanfield rifle with what Ken Hurst calls 'killer' wood, finest accuracy smithing along with good optics, creative and aesthetically-pleasing bottom metal treatment, you get the idea. My choice? Finest highly-figured juglans regia with ebony fittings, medium-wt Krieger or Obermeyer CM in 300 Win Mag, point-pattern checkering with mullered borders, shadowline cheekpiece, bench-fabbed TG with matching trigger finger-piece curve, bench-fabbed escutcheon/inlay for the front screw with space & shape for some sort of decoration or identification details, nonslip butt pad, detachable swivels with military-type shooting sling, nice Euro or Leupold medium-range variable in SOLIDly-smithed Talley mounts, free-floated bbl with solid action bedding block, crisp 1-lb trigger, minimal engraving with at least an engraved bolt knob, finest rust blue and oil finished wood and a good custom-fitted hard case with room for all accessories. Hey, you asked for ideas....(grin) Regards, Joe __________________________ You can lead a human to logic but you can't make him think. NRA Life since 1976. God bless America!

Bolt action, single shot, mag bolt face would also allow use of a rimmed cartridge of 30-30 rim size (maybe) or larger. Bruce
