| Use higher rings. In fact Ruger will trade you for the other sizes no charge. I had a #1S in 300 WM. It was a known shooter when I traded for it but I never liked to shoot it as the recoil bothered me. A club member noted that the comb was too high for me as it came with low rings. I got mediums and it was indeed much better.

| I have a Leupold 4X Compact on a .45/70, a Leup. 2X-7X on a 7X57, a Leup. 2.5X-8X on a .375 H&H, and a Kahles-Helia 6X on a 7mm Rem. Mag. All these seem satisfactory, but I guess I like the Leupold 2.5X-8X best. It combines excellent optics with a good weight and balance - not too big or heavy!

| Thanks for the info, now I will have a winter project. Mine is on a .375 and I want to start using it on elk next fall but the old eyes ain't got it anymore. I will try the medium rings and I like the idea of the 2.5x8. I would really like to try the bushnell 3200 firefly but I am also a burris & leopold fan. |

| With the location of the mounts far forward on the quarter rib, it can sometimes be hard to aquire proper eye relief on a #1. I have placed a Burris Fullfield II 4-12 on my 7 STW. The very long body of this scope makes it easy to get proper eye relief.

If you're mounting on a Ruger rifle, just call Ruger's Newport facility at 603-865-2442 and advise them. They'll send out a different set of rings at no charge. |

I know I paid about $70.00 for those rings, which came from Ruger via the "smith"
I've exchanged rings with Ruger many times and have NEVER been charged for it. Maybe if you spoke with them directly, vice an intermediary, they would have done it for free. FYI, if you paid $70, you got hosed. Brownell's sells them for $43 and Ruger, of course, GIVES them away. |

Ruger (direct) recently quoted me close to $70 shipped for a set of factory rings for my #1S. This of course after they informed me that my rifle was not supplied w/ rings when new... A board member here kindly supplied me w/ a used (good condition) set for a most reasonable price. I did look around (Midway at least) & saw mostly aftermarket rings available for less...

And your rifle was not originally supplied with rings, so that would make sense, would it not? The rifles on which I've made exchanges WERE equipped with rings. I simply called Ruger's Newport facility, said I have such-and-such scope that won't fit and I need such-and-such set of rings and they sent them -- at no charge. I've done this many, many times. My experience is not unique. quote: Originally posted by gcf: I did look around (Midway at least) & saw mostly aftermarket rings available for less...
Brownell's sells Ruger FACTORY integral ring sets for $43. Would you like the catalog numbers? |

| I have the VXIII on both of mine, lots of eye relief. I sued the rings that came w/ the rifle. Loading just takes practice. You may want to reshape the safety a bit to allow the fired brass to ectract cleanly.

| I have a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5X that I move between my .45-70, .375 H&H and 7 mm Rem Mag. My tip for eye relief is get a good scope that has some margin and then dial the power up to the highest setting when mounting the scope. The lower power is more forgiving. |

| I have a Bushnell Buckhorn 4X32 on mine. I bought the gun used with the scope attached. It has served me well in the last four seasons. It performs well at dawn and at dusk. And it doesn't fog in cold wet conditions. Don't know much about the Buckhorn but what I have seen. But what I seen I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. For what it is worth SS.
