I recenly sighted in my 45/70 Uberti shooting Hornady Leverevolution 325 grain bullets. Three shots touching together, 2 1/2 inches high at 100 yards and 2 inches low at 200 yards. This factory rifle and factory bullet shot better than my 300 Win Mag with a Hart barrel and hand loaded bullets. According to Hornady, muzzle velocity is 2050 feet per second and this bullet with it's soft plastic tip gives a wound channel that's twice as big as flat nosed cast bullets.

That is far better than my Uberti 1885 Winchester High Wall 45/70 Not A Real Highwall! as I have been informed ! maybe that is why it don't shoot very well ?

2050 fps for a 325 gr. bullet in ANY 45/70 is pretty damned fast. My experiences with load specs and chronos has been that the load specs are usually on the high end for velocity. I had a 45 ACP +P load from a Hodgdon Data Manual rated at 1162 fps, but the chrono was showing it at about 897. But if it's grouping well, don't worry about velocity. I've seen some slow bullets, but they're generally faster than what's being shot at.

As I slip my Stetson back on my head, spit a brown stream of toobaccy juice to the ground and say 'Well pilgrim, thems pretty big words from Hornady!' Having shot several of our small Virginia whitetails with a 445 grain cast, I'm not sure that I'd want 'twice as big hole'. Or maybe I would ask how much more dead is deader? Consider that one of the advantages of 45 caliber bullets over the lesser calibers, is they are preexpanded as they leave the bore. If these bullets shoot well in your rifle go for it.
