I took my new Rem XR-100 .223 out to the range Saturday October 15, 2005 to sight it in and try out some of my reloads.

I got out to the range about 11:00am it was still cool and the wind was not blowing. We picked out a table to setup on but found out the target holder was missing. A nice young man was leaving and he let us use his table.

Lesson 1 get to the range earlier so I can get a decent table.

I was looking through my bag having remembered that I did not set my scopes cross hairs square with the rifle. I then discovered that I did not have my Torx wrench that came with the scope rings.

Lesson 2 don’t forget the scope Torx wrench better yet buy a folding set.

The young man gave my father some targets he printed we thanked him and dad stapled them on the foam target holder that the range provides. He took the foam down to the 100 yard target holder put it on and came back.

I then decided to optically center the scope and adjust the wind-age on the base to get as close to center as I could (I should have done this at home). My father helped me do this by sighting down the bore and aligning the base and elevation as close as possible so I might get my first shot on the paper. I took a shot but did not see any hole, after about 15 more shots messing with the wind-age adjustment on the base I decided to go down range and look for holes.

Lesson 3 don’t use targets with big black circles and squares I can’t see the bullet holes.

When I got down range I couldn’t find any holes on the paper (20†x 20â€) I had forgot my large piece of cardboard that I usually use to sight in on. I replaced all of the printed targets with plane white paper and some ¾ inch florescent orange dots and marked every hole on the foam with a black marker. We then walked back to the shooting bench.

I finally decided that I would be wasting all of my bullets if I could not get my scope cross hairs aligned horizontal so I went asking all of the shooters trying to get a Torx wrench to align my scope. One of the shooters two tables down had a set he had bought at the gun show. We adjusted the scope and I thanked him for letting me borrow his set.

Having shot 20 or more bullets I decided it was time to clean the rifle. This I was prepared for and had no problems. I then shot another bullet “success†I finally found a hole in my target. It was about 18 inches to the right and about 6 inches high. I made the necessary adjustments to the height and moved the base over after 3 more shots I had it within ½ inch high and ½ inch to the right. A few more small scope adjustments and it would be time to go for a group.

I shot 2 bullets that were touching now I am thinking this gun can shoot I squeezed/jerked the third one off and hit about ½ inch from the others. Damn I thought got to try harder I was still pretty calm, no wind, so I decided to try again. I shot the first shot it was low in the orange dot, I shot the second shot it was inside the first shot only showing a little bigger, I started to get anxious time for the real test ( I only shoot 3 shot groups and let the gun cool) I shot the third time still in the same hole. I thought I got a rifle that can shoot finally. I had a Stainless Steel 22-250 Remington with fluted barrel and HS precision stock and never got better than a .5 group most of the time is shot 1 inch or more.

Some one on the firing line hollered clear I then had time to go down range and look at the target. As we walked down range I got my pocket knife so I could cut the out group bragging rights to my friends. I tried to shoot another group but the wind started to pickup, it was getting hot and I started to get the shakes.

Lesson 4 take something to eat so I don’t get the shakes (being diabetic)

We packed up the gear and went home I took my Starrett dial calipers and measured the group .255 outside to outside. Not bad for a factory Remington XR-100 .223 especially since I was shooting factory Winchester 45gr hollow points the ones that come in a 50 Value pack for $15.99 at the Gandy Mountain store.

Remington has come up with another winner I am very pleased with my XR-100 .223. I plan on having a lot of fun with this rifle competing with my friend shooting his Sako Semi Bench rest .223 and maybe some P-Dogs this spring.

I see nobody has anything to say. eek2

With all of the forum members out there I figured someone would have left a reply as to the accuracy I achieved.
One good group doesn’t tell much but I was excited.
I wanted you to know just how well the XR-100 will shoot if I do my part.

If I can get a picture of my group I will post it.

BTW: I am 49 and my Dad is 72 we still have a lot of fun together.

Swede44mag: I have something to say!
WOW!
And good for you and good for Remington!
I may just have to buy another XR-100 in 223 Remington it looks like!
KEEEERUMMMBBAAAAH! That is a great group you shot there!
I have been in frustarating range situations before - like you had with your 15 shots and nothing on paper fix!
I am so glad you eventually got it "printing" on paper! Like I said I have been there done that!
And for you to shoot such a great grouping with factory ammo - well I guess that is just even more impressive!
I shot a .322" five shot group at 100 yards with my XR-100 in caliber 204 Ruger! But that was with handloads and expensive bullets (Sierra BlitzKings)!
More later and congratulations again on your great grouping!
I am impressed!
Long live Remington!
Hold into the wind

Damned good shooting from an out-of-the-box rifle. Kinda makes you feel you got your money's worth, huh? And you know it's only going to get better once you've tuned the load and learned the idiosyncracies of the rifle.

I just got my custom rifle a little more than a week ago. I'm learning its little traits and habits, too. Great fun! I shot a .700 group at 100 yards without really trying; three of the five grouped at .200, center-to-center. I just pulled the load out of my ear-- no reloading manual or anything beyond looking up the max/min loads for the cartridge, powder and bullet I used. I just made sure to not overcharge.
