After GW's K1 post a month back or so, I've been enamored with the idea of a svelt single shot rifle to add to my collection. While I'd love to add another Merkel to my collection, I can't foot that big a bill right now (closing on our first house tomorrow!). I happened across CZ's web page and saw the Brno Effect FS in .308 and .30-06 and got to searching this forum and 24hr campfire for reviews with little avail. Anyone here own one or have any thoughts on them? $1700 seems like a very fair price if it's a well built rifle. I'd be much more apt to jump if it were a rimmed medium bore cartridge, mostly due to a few poor reviews of their extractor design. Still in the very beginning stages of my research, so any help is always appreciated.

I have been a CZ dealer for many years and signed up for their "range program" a few years back. One of the guns I ordered on the range program was the Effect. I did so based upon the pictures I saw on the web and from their dealer catalogue. When the gun came in I was highly disappointed in the quality of wood. It appeared to be some sort of hardwood other than walnut, stained dark and they attempted to make it look special. It didn't work, and for the money it cost, I said no and returned it.

The quality of the metal work and action looked fine. It is a break action, very simple. I'm sure they shoot well. Can't see getting one over a Ruger #1 or Browning High Wall / B78.

Hope this helps.

Interesting about the wood. I had a shot lived lust for a No 1 for a while, but it's faded for reasons unbeknownst to me. If this lack of furniture quality with the Brno is a common thing I suppose ill hold out until I come across one in person (unlikely). That would certainly be a deal breaker for me, also. I'll have to continue my researching too see if others have had similar experience as you.

All, finally stumbled upon one of these today and have to say I was pretty disappointed in it. It was wonderfully sleek and light, but the fit and finish left quite a bit to be desired. The sights felt and looked flimsy. The action release lever was unbearably stiff with quite a bit of play through the first half of its travel. The wood appeared as MD outlined above. I was generally underwhelmed by it.

My single shot quest continues.... With a higher budget!
