Hey guys, my boss has a pristine Ruger No1-V from the early 70's with a Unertl 12X Ultra Varmint on it. It's a really nice gun he got at a steal.

My question is, he wants to sell the scope and mount a modern scope on it. I am wondering if this is possible without having to send it to a gunsmith to have it drilled and tapped for the ruger quarter rib? The Unertl bases are a good 10"-12" apart, but I'm not sure if they would use the same hole pattern as the quarter rib. Any help would be appreciated.

It's a great gun I would leave as is but he's not a collector and doesn't really care about the nostalgia, So I'm just trying to help him out with some info.

Ruger 1V's cannot use the quarter rib because of the contour. They come standard with target blocks.

you'll either have to make a base to fit or i believe there is a mount made by someone for the 1v (can't remember who) however i hope you guys realize that the scope is probably worth more than the rifle

He could compromise and mount a Redfield 3200. It has AO and normal turrets.

yeah he knows how much the scope is worth (after i told him). I'm thinking his best bet might be to just sell the whole thing for twice what he paid and buy/build what he wants. he only bought it because he wanted a 22-250.

thanks for th info guys

And what precisely Smiler is this? Should that read "Unertl Ultra Varmint"?

Just checking. I have used Unertls all my life and have never heard of the Unertl "Varmint Special". Just want to make sure there isn't a big gap in the education I should have received....or is there?

Ruger No 1-V comes from the manufacurer with Ruger bases and rings made for that barrel contour.

Get on their web site and look up the catalogue numbers. Simple.
