I picked up this rifle off of Gunbroker yesterday. I've been looking for a 1A for
a while and just could resist this one because
of the stock. This rifle was built in 1976.

Questions -- Did Ruger put this type of wood on their No.1 rifles as standard fare at this time? Was this built during the period where Ruger was known to have used some barrels of poor quality on No.1 rifles?

thanks, dxr

Had one mfg around 2000, Ruger mfg own bbls then, very good, fired a 3/8" 3shot 100yd group, FC brass, 85 BTHP/IMR 4350. If that gun is not shooting sub MOA quick, I'd call Ruger and see if they'll fix it/replace tube. Don't settle, #1s shoot. Mine shot several groups 3/4-7/8 out the box, handloads and factory.

Nicer wood than most of newer ones.

Nice wood,
Ruger usualy used Wilson Barrels from 1973 to 1991. Wilson barrels are not know for there high quality but you never know till you shoot it.

I have a No.1S in .218Bee with very good wood. Again, similar to yours but not quite as good. I purchased mine in 1992 and it is the most accurate rifle I own.

I have heard the tale of bad No.1 barrels too. But none of the Ruger single-shots I've owned had bad barrels. The first one, a 7 Rem. Mag from 1968, has a Douglas Premium grade barrel. Don't know who made the other ones' barrels.

Nice wood is not rare on these guns, but not all of them are as nice as yours seems to be!

1) I bought a used #1 .223 to rebarrel.
But it shot too well to rebarrel.

2) I bought a used #1 7mmMag to rebarrel.
But it shot too well to rebarrel.

3) I bought a used #1V .223 to rebarrel.
But is shot too well to rebarrel.

4) I bought a used #1 270 to rebarrel.
1" 3 shot at 50y
.75" 2 shot at 100y
1" 3 shot at 100y
2" 3 shot at 100y
Finally, I get to rebarrel a #1.

.

This is very encouraging. I appreciate
the good words here.

I just got some of the new 80 grain TTSX
bullets to try in this rifle. I can see
"Blackbuck" written all over this rifle.

You might also be pleased to know that the vintage you have has a truly adjustable trigger, for the knowledgable gunsmith.

308 Sako -

Is there any more to adjusting this than let's
say a Remington M700 ? If so, I could do it
myself.

thanks, Chris

I have a 1974(I think)#1A in 7X57.
Don't know who made the barrel but the damn thing shoots ! You should have a nice little rifle there.
I would love either a 1-A or an RSI, in 30,06.
But the .243 is such an accurate round and pleasent to shoot.
if you have never carried a rifle like the 1-A in the field before , it is realy a good rifle to cary.
while not as light as you might think, the compact length of the rifle and the barrel band sling swivel keeps it from snaging on things when you are in brushy teritory.
I wish they had maded them in .308 as it would be about the perfect cartridge for that rifle.
I found a leathersmith who will make me a wrist band cartrige holder for 2 rounds.
I am sure with a little practice, I can get a 2nd shot off in about 3.5 to 4 seconds.
They are a we bit of a pain for scope mounting.
I recomend somthing with decent eye relief, meaning not to much power. there is a 2X7 leupold on mine.
