My "latest" No. 1 was made around 1997 (when I bought it). The trigger pull is....heavy. Lots of talk on these boards about installing new triggers, but that only solves part of your problem. The sear and hammer need to have their mating surfaces cleaned up (stoned smooth) and possibly recut for a smooth trigger pull. Ruger rough machines the fire control parts for the No. 1 in the interest of mass production.
I don't know what your definitions of "easily improved" or "major" are or what your machining capabilities are, but unless you have the means to maintain the contact angles of the sear and hammer I wouldn't do anything outside of stoning these parts.

My No. 1 is only a few months old, so its trigger might represent what Ruger is currently producing. Of course, factory triggers can differ greatly from rifle to rifle. With that in mind, my trigger is what I would call "decent" for a factory job. There's definitely some creep, but it's not rough in the least, very predictable. I haven't measured the pull weight, but my ballpark guess would be about 5 lbs. Being a larger caliber gun with iron sights only, my No. 1 will likely keep it's factory trigger. Of course, your mileage may vary.
