Did a search here but couldn't find what I wanted.
Itchin' for a #1 but want to know what the model designations mean: #1, 1A, 1AB, 1B, etc. I understand the accuracy caveats regarding #1's, looking for maybe a standard cal., 270, 280, '06, 7x57, etc., not varmint cals. Thanks.

Welcome to the #1 club Gimpy. I like the #1S w/ the shorter Alex. Henry forend. The #1B is a nice rifle but find the #1A too light & the #1H too heavy. You are more likely to find a #1 that shoots instead of one that does not. Let us know what you end up w/.

Thanks alot, Fred. Was on gunsamerica earlier and saw at least 30-40 #1's for sale in various configs from 218 Bee to 458 Win. Does your #1S have the quarter-rib for scope mounting? Looks like a place for potential inaccuracy, maybe? I'd prefer the 1V, with the integral setup, but I would want to rebarrel with more of a sporter contour, and know barrels are a bit of a pain to remove with the forearm hanger(I've done a couple of bolts). Anyway, thanks again for the added info.

As w/ most things, the more parts the more potential for problems. My #1S was factory stock in 7mm Rem. mag. The worst it ever shot was 2" w/ one of several factory loads. It shot so well I thought I would spend the money & have it rechambered to 7mm Dakota, for a bit extra perf. & just to be different.
The rifle easily shoots under 1.5MOA w/ just about everything I put through it. With choice handloads it breaks the MOA w/ little effort. The other #1H in .375h&h was an earlier model that only shot well w/ few loads. It was very picky, but would still group under 1.5MOA, again a stock rifle. I had this one rebarreled to .338x74Keith, a wildcat that is proving to be very accurate. I retained the 1/4 rib & bbl. band front sights on both because I like the way they look. I've thought about one in .300h&h, kind of a classic cart. for a classic rifle combo. I just can't justify more rifles! [Eek!]

Didn't think I could justify any more rifles, either, then the other night the boss says, "I think you need another rifle or action"!!!! She didn't have to say that twice! So I'm a-lookin' at #1's. Thanks again. BTW, sure is quiet over here. 'Twas getting a little "political" over in g'smithing.

She's kept me for 29 yrs. That's a feat, itself. Found a 1B 30-06 ,SS, supposedly new, w/ rings, no box, from dealer on internet for $600. Not sure if it has the vaunted "high fondle factor" of the regular wood, though. Whaddaya think? BTW, we could be neighbors. We live in Gold Country, Coloma area, NorCal.

I'm not a big fan of the new SS #1s. It just takes away from the classic look, but I think they are really practical for hunting.
No, I'm in the S. Ca. area in Orange county.

Thanks for all the help, Fred. I located a #1B in 270 up here in Redding, Ca. OK if I send a pic to your e-mail and get an opinion?(don't have scanner) He's asking $499 on auctionarms. It's a way to go, but I may drive up there and look at it. Spoke to the gunshop owner there this AM. I won't e-mail without your OK. Adios.

Gimpy, drop me an e-mail anytime. [Big Grin] Sounds like a decent deal. I'm more a .280 fan though. [Wink]
