I shoot No.1"s in 45-70, 300Win Mag, and my most recent acquisition is a SSK conversion to 577Nitro. I also have a Buffalo gun in 45-120.

Ive seen and used my share of various ammo holders and carriers. Depending on the weather and terrain, I like a leather box (with flap) on my belt or an open belt with loops worn in the front (or perhaps 1-2 o'clock). That works for carrying the bulk of my ammo; but for the fastest reload of my No.1, Ive been practicing carrying a spare round between my middle and ring finger of my shooting hand. Its a simple matter to pop open the lever and slip in the spare round, thats already in my hand, then close the lever.

Ive been carrying extra rounds in my support hand for my Double Rifles and SxS shotguns for awhile, so the concept is ingrained in my head. The 577NE is alot like holding a cigar (except in the wrong fingers).

Ive never used a wrist carrier. I can "see" how it might work; but it just "looks" uncomfortable to me. Buttstock holders never seemed fast enough to me and except for the "suede" feel on the Eagle carried I couldnt get comfortable with the elastic nylon next to my cheek. Because of my experiences with the cheap nylon carriers, I never tried one of the lace on leather types.

Try a buttstock shell holder from Murray Leather. Get the one with the elastic loops. Your cartridges will not fall out, the leather shelll holder will not move either.

This is shown on a TC Encore but I use them on No. 1s too.

I always put the first one or two rounds up high so they are easy to grab.

How is a butt stock carrier any better then the other options? I will admit its convenient; but its hardly fast. Perhaps its just me, as I have always used belt carry, to supplement what I hold between my fingers.

I've never liked the butt stock carriers.I use a wrist carrier made of elastic and Velcro for my double rifle and my #1's works very well.I never felt comfortable with extra rounds in my fingers.

+ 1

I'm the same, tried it, it distracted me from holding and shooting the gun properly.

I use a variety of single shot rifles and where to put the extra round is always a hassle.

I have to say , the only one that is easy is my Martini cadet .22 K-Hornet - i slip a spare cartridge in between the scope base and the scope tube and it sits there quite happily. Obviously wont work on bigger calibers but it does for this one.

Otherwise I use a ammo pouch at my waist or have my 12 yr old hold the spares for me ... Wink
