Does anyone have this rifle in .458 Lott ? I was wondering how both recoil and accuracy were in this rifle Tkanks Tanoose

Tanoose, Mine is in .458 Win Mag and the recoil is pretty stiff. I'm fairly recoil tolerant mind you, so perhaps others would call it quite heavy. To me it's heavy but manageable... In the Lott I've heard recoil is very heavy, esp in the #1 since it's a relatively light rifle compared to the bolt guns. It probably ranks up near the maximum most shooters can tolerate and beyond what some can deal with and shoot accurately. Obviously shooting it off a bench may border on masochistic, but there are other positions to shoot from that make it alot more pleasant. If you reload it's no big deal because you can load it down and work your way up as you get accustomed to the recoil and avoid developing a major league flinch. Accuracy in #1's can be superb generally, though some do need some tinkering with the barrel hanger beneath the forearm to get them to perform really well. There are posts here that discuss this issue in detail. .22 LR Ruger M77/22 30-06 Ruger M77/MkII .375 H&H Ruger RSM

I've got one in 458 win mag that I'm thinking of punching out to 458 lott. I put a limbsave pad on mine and a mercury recoil reducer in the stock hole. Recoil is not bad even with 510 grain full house loads. I've got a vxIII 1.5-5 on it and I haven't been hit by it yet. I tried loading it down to make it a "plinking" gun. I used 300 grain flat nose at about 1700 fps. The recoil was extremely mild but the accuracy was terrible. The twist rate in a 458 is different than the 45-70 and I guess it just needs bigger faster pills. The 510's group a little under 2" at 100 yds. Libertatis Aequilibritas

Ruger has managed to produce the worst functioning recoil pad I have ever seen. Looks great, works terrible, and its thin so if you add a good pad the lop gets a little long for shorter folks. On the positive side the tropical No. 1's are a little muzzle heavy so you can add a recoil reducer or just some weight to the buttstock to help recoil a little and not unbalance the gun.

quote: I concur. I couldn't get over how hard my 375 kicked, compared to two other 375s I had at the time, until I replaced that pad with a decelorator - it's sweet now. Antlers Double Rifle Shooters Society Heym 450/400 3"

I have #1's in .458WM and .375H&H. Both a bit stiff with max loads. But from experience with a 7mm Rem Mag and a muzzle break, I would recommend going as large overbore as you WANT to and add a muzzle break. I had parked mine for 10 years because the recoil was so sharp, the break made it kick like .308 . (And kicked up gravel from the muzzle blast.)
