Hello All, I just bought Steve E's personal copy of Gunsmithing by Roy Dunlap on the classified forum. . . . Why? I collect Schuetzen rifles, and custom rifles by Leonard Mews. So this rifle of mine (shown below) fits both categories. Leonard Mews, according to a quote by Roy Weatherby, was his "First" and his "Best" stock maker, ever. There are a couple of pictures of this rifle in the Dunlap book. One, with a detail description by Leonard himself, and the other, shows the unfinished Schuetzen stock laying on Leonard's workbench while he is checkering a stock for Phil Sharpe. I knew both Leonard (Lenny) Mews, and Clifford (Christy) Christopherson. They were both members of our Gun Club here in Appleton, Wisconsin. Hello Ole Miss Guy, Thanks for the reply. I've also worn out one copy, and working on the second.

Have you got "Major Ned H. Roberts and the Schuetzen Rifle"? A fascinating read on how they loaded some of them (inserting the bullet into the throat in front of the cartridge) and their early duplex loads when smokeless first became available. I took these pics on the shop counter at Geo. Beitzingers years ago. Have no idea where it wound up.

I was interested in them when I lived in Germany, as they went for good prices. But I never bit the bullet. How many people are into that dicipline in America? Is it common. I have never seen someone shooting one at any range I have ever been to in my life on any continent.

We used to have a custom bootmaker out here that lied in Lampasas. When he was in War 2 he was in the taking of Berlin + managed to get enough Shuetzen rifles shipped out along with their dies to line his basement wall. It was quite an impression. When he was laid up in the hospital his son who was on drugs came in + cleaned him out. As far as I know, none have been seen again at least not to the public eye. Sad story. There is bound to be a warm place waiting for that boy to do that to his father. Never mistake motion for action.
