I just got back my reciever with new 223 barrel fitted from H&R today. my first question is what kind of locktite works best for scope mounts. I want them put in tight but at some point I might wanna take them out and don't want to strip the screws. Also how does one remove the stock on these handi's.

I had the same question with my Encore VVCG 338 RUM barrel. I did some research because my Encore 338 RUM gets pretty hot after five rounds and whatever VVCG was using was not holding. So I went to Alaska Industrial Hardware and read all the applications of use on all the various Permatex threadlockers. I looked for the size screw/bolt I was using for my scope base mount and the strength (inches pounds/ft pounds) that was required to hold the base and lastly "temperature". After all the different colors of the threadlocker I went with the purple threadlocker due the fact it resist temperatures up to 300 degrees and is low strength such as the fastener that holds a scope base and I could remove the base later if needed. So IMHO, go with the Purple Permatex Threadlocker. Its held my 338 RUM scope base together.
ok another question i forgot to ask. Is there a good way to tell if your mount screws are bottoming out. I bought this handi with a 30-30 barrel and a crappy scope base that came loose. I have learned it was the wrong base to begin with. basically I want to eliminate any potential base problems

To remove the stock, you'll need a 'phillips' screwdriver. Look at the recoil pad, look for 2 "holes" that the screws were installed thru. You can force the phillips thru the hole to reach the screws. (a little lube makes it easier) When the 2 screws are removed, the pad comes off. Inside the stock is a thru-bolt to the receiver ( I forget the size) you can now remove the stock from the receiver or just check to see if it is tight! It's easy! Good luck!

I use Blue loctite on all my base screws but make sure you degrease the screws and the holes before ya use it.
What I do when mounting a base is this. Dry fit it first by setting the base in place with all the screws just started. Tighten one screw down and see if the base will move, if it's tight then loosen it and try that with the next screw. Do that with each screw. If a screw bottoms out you can file it till you have the proper fit. I like at least 3 full threads holding on each screw so go slow when you file one down.
