I'm considering an H&R Ultra Rifle in .223 for coyotes and have a few questions about H&R rifles. See:
http://www.hr1871.com/firearms/index.php?cat=4&subcat=22

- At what range would a rifle like that be accurate for coyotes?

- Are H&R rifles sturdy and reliable?

- Should I get the scope that's offered with the rifle or plan on getting my own?

Any tips appreciated! Thx

At any range you can reliably hit a yote at with any .223. Mine shoots sub 1/2 moa with the Win white box 45gr JHP.

As reliable as any rifle costing considerably more. Polish the chamber and keep it clean and it will shoot. The new for 2005 .223 Ultra will have a mechanical extractor as opposed to the spring driven ejector of the older models. Also will have blued 24" fluted heavy barrel and synthetic stock.

Unless a dealer decides to sell a package deal, the H&R Ultra does not come with a scope if you are referring to the pictured Ultras at HR1871.com. Even if the dealer did provide a scope, I'd be cautious of package scopes, they are usually cheapos.

The .223 NEF is good, but I like the .243 with the bull barrel..300+ yards if you do your part..Have eleven NEF's and all are good shooters. Having said this--I have made some good shots with the .223 and handloads. Out of the factory ammo, the American Eagle, (Federal 55 grain) shoots the best IMHO...duroc

I have a couple rifles by them, and one shotgun, got to say ALL have been great guns. i use a 280 handi for a deer rifle, and a 223 ultra hunter is my Woodchuck/Coyote/Other Little Critters like fox and bobcat. both guns shoot great, and always does the job as long as i do mine. i also have a 12ga classic deluxe, i have not used it alot, as it was a x-mas gift. but the couple times i have taken it out rabbit hunting, it has done great. all in all, they are GREAT guns for the money. my 223 kills varmints just as good as my hunting buddy's guns that cost atleast 2-3x as much

I have a ultra varmit in .223 and it is a great shooter. Trigger took a while to break in and smooth up ( 200 rds or so ) but very accurate and a real joy to use. Find myself with it more than my Ruger 77 22-250 varmit rifle. Smiler
